Doom Free To Go On Sale In Germany After 17 Years

Doom Free To Go On Sale In Germany After 17 Years

Here's a weird one. Doom, the first-person shooter we all grew up playing, hasn't been on sale in Germany ––  ever! A rather strange report has surfaced over the weekend, showing that the classic will finally be on sale after 17 years of being on a ban list. Yeah, 17 whole years! As it was, the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (Bundesprufstelle) had sentenced the title in the same restrictive category as pornography, which had kept it off of store shelves for nearly two whole decades. Of course, there were other means of acquiring it, but not on the straight-and-narrow.

Now, however, that's all changed. A recent meeting of the entity pulled it out said category. Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines, told Joystiq the following: "We are obviously very pleased with their decision. Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."

So, it looks like those who've waited 17 long years to play one of the biggest classics to ever come our way will be able to do so soon in Germany. Who's throwing a pixilated party?

Will it even play on a modern Win-7 64Bit computer?

I haven't messed with DosBox before,......is it a PITA? Or is it a good way to make old games work on a new system? I'd love to be able to play Descent I and II again.

Thanks for the info,......I'll give it a try when I have some time on my hands. We had a massive Lightning storm here (2 days ago @ 5:30 AM) and it took my wife's PC out. I'm putting another one together now. Then I have to restore it to it's earlier magnificence. I have several ground rods around the house and one of them is now a little shiny-blue. It's right outside her office window and it may have taken a direct hit. (I'm not sure about it) I keep three PSU's on the shelf at all times here, and none of them would make her mainboard come back from the dead. The Optical drive is dead, the memory sticks are burned, the PSU is toast, and I'm gonna have to go to the backup drive for DATA because her 750GB drive will not spin up. On the bright side, her monitor is still working and the speakers too! I just thought of something,.....I need to check her printer out too. Sigh!,.....

Oh man sorry to hear about that .I could be wrong but didn't you mention you had some UPS devices around.?

Either way some times 'stuff' just happens and pretty sure you'l get it sorted out ..& likely for the better too !

meanwhile I think there was a game mod of Doom for Doom 3

Yes, but they were old and when I charged them up they were way too hot to the touch, so I took them to be recycled.

Yep! She's got a Phenom-II X2 545 3.0GHz Dual Core CPU in a budget ASRock N68-S UCC Mainboard with a NVIDIA N68 Chipset on it. The RAM is two 2GB DDR2 800 sticks from GSKill. I put two 400GB SeaGate 7200RPM SATA-II drives in it, and a Radeon HD 4650 1GB Card too. ASUS DVD Burner and a barely used Thermaltake 430W PSU from the shelf.

It's plenty good enough for her schoolwork/master studies.

She's happy with it's responsiveness and says that she's lucky to have someone who can repair PC's in the house. She marvels at how fast I had it working, and now she understands why I'm buying spare parts all of the time. Smile

She's really not a very 'high maintenance' kind of girl and I'm actually the one who is spoiled.

Looks like plenty of processing power to play Doom & Doom II  on it as well too ! Is that the rig you plan on running the DOSbox on ? If that rig is running Linux it would be quite 'snappy'

& you have  a blue lightening rod  Smile

No, it's just for her and her schoolwork/personal use. She doesn't play games because she's far too busy with her teaching job, Chairing the English department at her High School, Animal Rescues, and pursuing her Masters Degree.

DOSBox wil probably go on my A8-3850 system. I just ordered a discrete GPU and 16GB of this RAM to go with the on-board GPU in a hybrid crossfire setup. It's supposed to really improve the way it works. (nothing wrong with it the way it is now though) It has a Vertex-II SSD boot drive in it and a 1TB drive for storage. It's certainly not on par with my i7-870's or the Sandy bridge box, but it's excellent for the money it costs.

Yes, it's a copper rod three quarters of an inch thick, and now it's a shiny blue in color. (from being superheated by a crap-load of electricity) Several people have told me that it appears to have taken a direct hit by lightning.

Sweeet ! selection and choice for the GPU and ram  ! gotta be diligent  & savy with the lookouts for deals.most excellento for the performance - price BANG !

Wasn't the lightening rod buried in the ground ? was this the one by the widow ? if that solid copper rod gets zapped can it be used again ?  is it considered to be a good or bad omen  to reuse it ? apparently it worked .& did it's job...well sort of ...

It's not a lightning rod, it's a ground rod. It only sticks up about three feet. I think that because it was a good ground, it was hit by the lightning bolt.

Maybe I'll think about putting a few Lightning Rods on the roof now. It may be worth it to do.

Oh yeah that';s right it is a grounding rod I have one too that buried along side the house.noticed during the summer one of the wires got severed possibly by some aggressive string trimming so made sure to fix that.

Last experience I actually had of playing Doom II would likely have been the mod version for Doom 3 & will likely get around to playing with DOSbox a bit because you never know the need for 'BurgerTime' or something like that.

Thanks for the heads up on Desent I and II  prettty good eh ?

Descent I & II probably took the most of my time, of any game ever. I just loved it. Me and my old CH-Flightstick Pro were bad to the bone in those games. I wore 2 of those Joysticks out back then.

I listen to XM Radio '70's and Classic Rock stations a lot. I end up with songs staying in my head for days at a time sometimes. Smile

But you're right, nothing wrong with it.

Song Playing now,...."another one bites the dust"
