Dell Laptops Get a 256GB SSD Option

On Friday, Dell added a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) option to is Inspiron M1330 and Inspiron M1730 laptops, matching Apple, which announced a 256GB SSD option for its unibody Macbook Pro earlier this month.

Dell just blasts Apple away price-wise, however. Adding the 256GB option to the standard M1730, for example, adds just $400 to the price. Adding the same option to the MacBook Pro adds $900. The MacBook Pro also won't ship for 2 - 3 weeks, but Dell's site doesn't mention a delay when you add that option to the laptop.

The biggest obstacle for the adoption of SSDs remains pricing. Although the $400 premium for a 256GB SSD is much more affordable than normal, $400 is still a lot of money. Right now I still wouldn't recommend them for most people. Still, as prices continue to fall, SSDs will undoubtedly garner a much larger market share than they currently do.
