Cisco's AppHQ Bringing You-Know-What To Cius Enterprise Tablet

It's pretty amazing when you think about: just five years ago, the word "app" was probably shorthand for application, otherwise known as something like Microsoft Word. These days? Oh, everyone knows what an app is. Even Cisco, a company steeped in enterprise technology. But even a company that's catering mostly to businesses can't just stand around while the App Revolution passes them by, which explains this week's introduction of AppHQ.

It's described as an application ecosystem built specifically for its enterprise tablet, Cisco Cius, that allows companies to create private, custom branded application storefronts for employees to find, publish and procure applications for business use. AppHQ provides developers with tools and resources to create, test and market applications, and allows IT managers to control which applications can be used on the devices. With Cisco Cius, organizations are told that they can now deliver an optimized tablet with enterprise-grade security, as a natural extension of the enterprise network. The device provides customers with mobility, centralized manageability, virtual content creation and computing capabilities, and a comprehensive suite of collaboration applications.

Will an enterprise tablet really take off? Hard to say. HP's Windows 7 tablet never really was a hit, but who knows -- maybe the timing's right this go around.
