Chrome Edging Out Firefox In Browser Wars

According to StatCounter, Google’s Chrome browser overtook Mozilla’s Firefox for the first time last month; in November, Chrome snagged 25.69% of the global Web browser market share, while Firefox managed 25.23%.

To put the rise of Chrome in perspective, two years ago it held a meager 4.66% of the market to Firefox’s 32.21%. It’s been steadily on the rise ever since.

It’s important to note, however, that although Chrome has certainly pilfered users from Firefox, Firefox has only lost 6.98% of its market share over the past two years. The bulk of Chrome’s user base is bleeding directly from Internet Explorer. IE is still far and away the browser leader with 40.63% market share, but it has lost considerable ground from two Novembers past, when it held 56.57%.

Other browsers are maintaining a small amount of market share. Safari has 5.92% of the market, and Opera has 1.82%.

Surprising... While Chrome is a good browser in it's own right, I do wish more people would use Firefox due to it being more open and well, more established. Plus you can run it in 64-bits (IE does this as well but really, you'd rather have a better browser would you.)

What this does tell us is that Google has a hell of a userbase and a hell of a marketing force behind it's products; It'll be surprising if IE manages to become a minority browser and Chrome becomes the #1 browser in the world, I mean Google is just that powerful when it comes to it's own products.

i also like the sheer amount of great addons for firefox. as a dev/designer they are priceless.

All your Browsing be long to us -- Chrome.

No surprise there I suppose, more people are becoming hip to Chrome(I guess Google's ad dollars are talking here) and leaving IE (which I think most people on windows machines just use because it's already "there" no need to install another browser)

Firefox is indeed the most customizable browser out there, but I switched too, I use Chromium and IE. Firefox is still lurking around, but I don't use it as regularly as the other two.

I myself love Chrome its fast - stats back this up

its safe - 2 words Sand box.

No surprise here at all. Chrome FTW!

I am actually surprised that it took this long for Chrome to overtake Firefox. I thought that would happen within a few months of lauch.

POLL: Now that Chrome has surpassed Firefox, is this the beginning of the end for Mozilla?

I have banned chrome from my household. Google did not follow the rules when designing the browser. It install into the user folder by default and is only available to that 1 user. So if you have a system with multiple users you have to install it on every user profile. Plus it circumvents the security of needing to be an administrator to install the program by default.

But good for them on making such strides.

IE still has that huge of a huge lead?!?! *GASP* I can't figure out why people still use that browser!!

-another [facepalm] moment!

Probably because most can't be bothered to download a newer, better browser maybe?

@Manduh when looking at that percentage you have to consider corporate computers. Most organizations use IE because it is the only browser that they can control easily through Windows Group Policy. But for home users I agree their is no excuse for using an inferior browser.

Firefox is definitely > Chrome

Good point too omega, but I think Taylor really hit the nail on the head from a personal consumer perspective. People just use what their system came with because they don't know enough to switch it out, or they're too lazy. Also they probably assume since it came with their computer it must be safe to use.. etc etc. It's just such a terrible browser.

I used to use Firefox religiously but I was having issues with it so switched to Chrome and haven't looked back. The only time I use Firefox now is (rarely) when I need to be logged in to a personal account and a business account at the same time on the same site (Twitter/facebook etc) having two different browsers open lets me do that :) Which is the only reason why FF is still on my lappy.

my university actually has been putting firefox on all it's boxes (pc's and mac's)

A university is very different than a business or a K-12 organization school district. They usually put a lot less controls on browsers because they are dealing with teaching adults and not children. They have less laws that they have to abide by as well.

i used to work as a tech- its on the boxes in the offices unrelated to the actual education (the business offices). they put it on every box that is owned by the school.

From personal experience, Firefox has never failed me while Chrome, while it is fast, just doesn't have all the features that I like. So... Firefox > Chrome

I haven't made the jump to Chrome yet... is it really better than Firefox? I kind of like my add-ons.

Choose IE 9 today! It's the worlds #1 browser used to download other browsers.

I mainly use Firefox still...but don't mind Chrome. At my college they have IE8 on all the pc's, but run Firefox on the macs...

It took me a while to get used to Chrome but now the Firefox interface feels foreign. I've switched to Chrome and I have no plans on going back. Sure there are a lot of add ins for Firefox but even the ones I bothered installing saw next to no use. Chrome just flows so well.

I use FFX and Chrome both, and Opera on my Wii, lol.  I love FFX, but it does tend to get very annoying due to the fact that it's still a memory hog.  It's not near as bad as it used to be, a few versions back even, but it still uses too much imo.  Loading up Google as my homepage automatically causes it to jump to over 300MB of RAM usage alone!  Then i open other tabs, and it's more and more until it chokes eventually.  With Chrome, I don't have these issues.  Regardless, I'll never go back to IE, I hate it with a blindingly furious passion.

I use all three of them actually, but I do prefer to use Mozilla's browsers overall.Cool I have to use IE8 on my XP Pro x64 bit pc & the rest I mainly use IE8 & Firefox with Chrome only on one pc.Yes

I'm like you gazd1, but I stay away from Chrome actually. I like to think that I will not help any of them into the monopoly area idea. By going all the way with Goolge's Chrome, that will eventually be like helping a fairly giant size monopoly based company.

Actually I have Chrome, FF, and IE on my computer and they are all 3 actively updated. I use Chrome and FF both (IE when I am forced) and Sarah like's IE best so when she is on here she uses it.

My gaming pc, which I have not used lately, I tend to use Mozilla's browsers & only use Chrome every now & again to see how things roll.Cool On that gaming pc, I never use IE8 at all, but instead use only Mozilla's browser.Yes I have only one online x64 bit pc & that is my dual boot XP Pro x32 bit retail boxed with an XP Pro x64 bit OEM operating system. On that one I tend to use IE8 on both of the XP Pro dual boots with some other computers I have again the Mozilla browser in use mainly. So far I have to say that I think Mozilla's assortment of browsers are the best so far.Cool
