BAPCo Defends SYSmark 2012, Says AMD is Full of It

AMD went on the offensive against BAPCo yesterday when the chip maker not only announced that it was quitting the consortium and wouldn't be endorsing BAPCo's SYSmark 2012, but also by laying out all the reasons why it feels the benchmark is flawed. It didn't stop there. AMD also said that BAPCo threatened to ban the chip maker from the consortium if it didn't shut its pie hole. Heavy stuff. BAPCo, your response?

"Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was, until recently, a long standing member of BAPCo. We welcomed AMD’s full participation in the two year development cycle of SYSmark 2012, AMD’s leadership role in creating the development process that BAPCo uses today and in providing expert resources for developing the workload contents," BAPCo said in a statement. "Each member in BAPCo gets one vote on any proposals made by member companies. AMD voted in support of over 80% of the SYSmark 2012 development milestones, and were supported by BAPCo in 100% of the SYSmark 2012 proposals they put forward to the consortium."

So according to BAPCo, AMD has little to whine about given that it had an equal vote just like all the other members, and further approved the majority of SYSmark 2012's development milestones. But it's that other 20 percent that so vexes AMD, which as we covered yesterday has to do with BAPCo's disregard for GPU performance.

What it all boils down to is a he-said-she-said affair, and BAPCo "notes for the record that, contrary to the false assertion by AMD, BAPCo never threatened AMD with expulsion from the consortium, despite previous violations of its obligations to BAPCo under the consortium member agreement."

And that, folks, is the other side of the coin.

typical press release, now lets what for the amd rebuttal

Looks like somebody got their feathers ruffled.

Just go your separate ways if AMD feels your results are flawed and do not take into account GPU processing so be it. But the rebuttal is like the article states he said she said.

I hear others may follow suit, time will tell.

Gotta love the he-said she-said game... Are these companies back in middle school?

Just go your separate ways and so be it.

AMD's complaints are also a perfect example of why any valid reviewer such as hothardware would perform measurements using multiple benchmarks and not SYSMark alone.

I dont know why these two are duking it out. Its not going to help either one of them.

@ omegadraco exactly what I was thinking.

AMD is full of it imo.

OK Done ! ...time for a Beer

Personally, I think that the whole he said she said thing is a bit of an oversimplification. Both companies had a disagreement, and I can see where each of them is coming from. I really wish that SYSmark would do some integrated GPU calculations in their CPU tests, but it would be difficult to choose the correct standard that would not favor one company over another, especially since GPU architecture is so diverse, and different GPUs are built to support a huge variety of different metrics. I think it would be easy enough to do H.264 decoding though, I would really like to see efficiency matrics for h.264 decoding. I'm sure there are other metrics that they could run on the on die GPU.

It would be difficult, but not entirely possible. There have been a ton of tests that were used for CPU performance as well as GPU performance. I can safely say that there's going to be one for integrated GPU calculations in CPU tests.

Hot Hardware provides their readers with great reviews, analysis, and soap opera drama of the tech related kind!

AMD must sleep on the sofa in the consortium, or they must move out of the house and take their belongings with them. :p

So if you cant control the outcome and things dont go the way you want them. Just turn around and call the others liars? Seems like a modern trend? :P

Wasnt I the one saying ATI was seeling more than it can deliver?

I think Ill take a que from Shelly and create a bot that says "Told Ya So:P"
