Asus Eee PC M101MT Netbook/Tablet To Ship Next Month For $499

Tablet PCs may be all the rage right now, but there's still the question of how many people actually want to use a keyboard-less slate. We're guessing that the novelty may wear off, and that most folks will end up yearning for an actual keyboard to bang on. For that reason, we think there is a lot of attractiveness in something like the 10.1" Eee PC T101MT, which acts like a tablet if you'd like, but flips around and becomes a netbook when you need a full gamut of keys.

The machine was introduced a couple of months ago, but it has since been lost under the iPad and Tegra 2 news that has been seeping from every corner. Asus has equipped this with a 1024x600 panel (multi-touch), Windows 7 Home Premium and plenty of other extras, and now we know that it will ship next month. That's a pretty quick turnaround for a notebook that first saw daylight at CES, and we're hearing that it will be available in the U.S. for $499. That's a pretty competitive price point; the iPad will cost the same, yet it won't come with a keyboard. This machine also has a full operating system compared to the iPad's limited iPhone OS. The value proposition seems pretty clear to us, but we'll let the sales figures speak for themselves when they come out in just a few months.

I would always need the traditional computers with a keyboard and a reasonable sized screen :). If i had to choose... this would win the ipad any day.

Weight, battery life, GPS, Cellular? Aren't we comparing Apples and oranges? I don't think the iPad is targetting the same group of users.

This is what I am waiting for!

This product sounds great and I really like the price as well. I've been waiting for something like this because for the longest time, it seemed like my only option was the HP tablets/notebooks that cost $1000. I just need it for taking notes in school and probably future use at a job. I figured a tablet would be nice for taking notes because I could easily type notes and then quickly switch to tablet mode to draw graphs (for economics class).

What is the fascination with these netbooks? I guess I understand the whole size issue. But when it comes to a tablet, it really needs a bigger screen. Although if you are just going to use this for notes in class or work, this might make sense.

I still love my M285, it has a 14" screen and I wanted something much larger. I guess that is why I got the 21UX :)

This one, unlike all the others looking for Ipad dominance, HAS a scribe. When it comes to a tablet, that really cones in handy! If you have only a touch screen you will always have to worry about getting cheeseburger grease on the screen throughout the day :) Also for simple doodling and note taking these make a good choice for when you are on the go, and have a burst of imagination.

Vista and 7, have great tablet capabilities and have become very stable since the first iteration of Win Tablet XP. I doubt these things will see more than about 8 pressure levels on the pen. This only allows you to do basic Pen/Pencil functions. So you really cant go crazy in Painter or to advanced in Photoshop. But it will work with both as a more advanced sketchpad.

Just remember these things are not for people who become unhinged easily. They do have a reputation as having hinges that break real easy, and I have seen some bad ones. I have had mine for about five years and I have taken extra care treating like fine crystal. Even now there is cracking on the hinge and the screen separating around the base.

I am sure if we give it about three or so months, the price will come down or at least it will become more powerful. If you need something this size for school or work? Out of all the contenders, I would probably recommend this one!

I looks OK with me. And I would certainly consider buying it before I paid the 'Apple-Tax' again.

Looks very similar to the Lenovo S10-3t... Its great that many more options are coming to market and hopefully at the same time of the iPad release
