Asus ARES II Graphics Card Goes on a Record Breaking Rampage

The talk of the town is Titan, NVIDIA's latest slice of silicon, but the fastest graphics card on the planet plays for the other team. Lest anyone forget that, AMD gave us a heads up that the ASUS ARES II graphics card -- a Radeon HD 7970 X2 -- recently broke a bunch of benchmark records, including one that was achieved using the card's stock cooling.

With its stock cooling, the card posted a score of 7,213 in 3DMark's Fire Strike Extreme test, aided by an Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme Edition processor clocked at 4.5GHz, ASUS Rampage IV Formula motherboard, 16GB of DDR3 memory, and two solid state drives (SSDs) in RAID 0. The card itself was running at 1,200MHz (GPU) and 1,710MHz (memory).

Using a custom water cooler, the ARES II was able to post the following scores:
  • 3DMark Fire Strike: FS14,508 (1,250MHz GPU / 1,700MHz memory)
  • 3DMark 11 Xtreme: X8,959 (1,300MHz GPU / 1,700MHz memory)
  • 3DMark 11 Performance: P21,655 (1,320MHz GPU / 1,700MHz memory)
  • Unigine Heaven Xtreme: 5,615,582 (1,220MHz GPU / 1,700MHz memory)
