Apple Releases Firmware Updates For MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini
It’s a veritable firmware update jamboroo this week at Apple. On Monday, the company released a firmware update for mid-2011 MacBook Air models (EFI Firmware Update 2.1), and today it rolled out updates for mid-2011 Mac minis (EFI Firmware Update 1.3) and early-2011 MacBook Pros (EFI Firmware Update 2.2).
The firmware fixes all essentially address the same issues. (In fact, the descriptions for the MacBook Air and Mac mini are identical, save for the names of the computers.)
The first issue pertains to Lion Recovery. For the MacBook Air and Mac mini, the updates fix a stability problem when running Lion Recovery from an Internet connection. The Lion Internet Recovery portion of the MacBook Pro update indicates that the feature wasn’t even enabled on those machines until now.
The updates will all also fix a problem with Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance.
Both fixes are important; Thunderbolt, for its part, is Apple’s hot new I/O technology, so getting it to work right is paramount. Lion Recovery is a crucial part of Mac OS X Lion’s trio of recovery/repair/restore tools, which includes the built-in Recovery HD and Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. Its only job is to run recovery/repair/restore over the Internet if your hard drive croaks, so ensuring stability is pretty important.
