Apple Fesses Up to Underage Labor Violations

The Internet is abuzz this morning over Apple's "2010 Supplier Responsibility Progress Report." In it are some 24 pages detailing the results of Apple's self-imposed audit of all of its suppliers to ensure that each one meets the company's "Supplier Code of Conduct." What has the Internet swarming with activity is this little tidbit:

"Apple discovered three facilities that had previously hired 15-year-old workers in countries where the minimum age for employment is 16. Across the three facilities, our auditors found records of 11 workers who had been hired prior to reaching the legal age, although the workers were no longer underage or no longer in active employment at the time of our audit."

While the underage labor has been receiving the most attention, there were several other violations of note, including excessive recruitment fees, suppliers contracting with non-certified vendors for hazardous waste disposal, and even three cases of providing falsified records during the audit. Breaking these down into sub-categories, the list goes on, including working hours violations in 60 facilities, improperly calculated overtime wages, a lack of anti-discrimination measures during the hiring process, and several more.

Not to make a mountain out of a mole hill, Apple's data suggests that 98 percent of its suppliers that were assessed by auditors are within full compliance of the company's Code of Conduct. But even still, the long list of violations is pretty staggering.

What about the employee who lost an iPhone, and then committed as reported, a very questionable "Suicide". I am not saying Steve Jobs shot him, but when you make and develop a large number of your products in a country like China, not to mention in a wall city, things are handled differently. Then kind of like as in a US court of law guilty by association is very applicable. I wonder how many of the Apple faithful would be so if they actually knew anything about these things. I know a great part of them would automatically that it was a lie etc. I mean with irrefutable evidence though!

Temme about it.. Apparently, the security guards @ the Foxconn facility tortured the poor engineer so much that he committed suicide!!Angry

What a pity!! If its so much rocket science, Why in the first place were the engineers given the devices to test it in the field, outside the facility? I hated iPODs already for their "Mates only with iTunes" ***, now more Apples jus get spoilt!!

BTW, I own a COWON O2 for playing my FLACs with a AKG K81 Can. Wink

You know what the funniest thing is I think. Ok; this is containing some generalized statements, but here goes. On a general basis major apple fanboys come from several camps which all seem to have some things in common. The largest percentage from what I see is in art in many forms, and education. Where there are generally many different fields and individuals in all the Apple users, in general they are bent more from the Liberal side of things. I see no problem with that, and am definitely not a foot stomping conservative in any way myself, although in some issues I may lean that way somewhat. Violation of human rights seems to be on many peoples mind these days, and especially on the liberal side of things. However; the company who many are huge fans if not walking diatribes of violates human rights left and right, with pure impunity? Does that make sense!

I disagree. Contrary to the title, Apple never fessed up to anything. In a self-imposed audit, they discovered violations in 2% of their suppliers' plants, of which three (out of more than 60) had underage workers. And the article indicates all underage violations were taken care of quickly.

The labor violations in Nike plants remain much more severe in comparison.
