Apple Mulling Unlimited Music Plan

Put this in your rumor bucket for now, but the Financial Times says Apple is in discussion with the music industry over a possible "all you can eat" music plan for iTunes.

Apple is in discussions with the big music companies about a radical new business model that would give customers free access to its entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices.

The “all you can eat” model, a replica of Nokia’s “comes with music” deal with Universal Music last December, could provide the struggling recorded music industry with a much-needed fillip, and drive demand for a new generation of Apple’s hardware.

It very much seems out of character for Apple.  Apple has generally pushed the industry for "what it wants" and as it won't even go to tiered pricing, this seems unlikely - but who knows?  Based on some calculations around the blogosphere, this could be gold for Apple.  More to come.

 would save me some money

I could easily see this happening. Not that Apple needs any help selling iPhones, but this would be an added incentive in buying one. Though I think it's unlikely that this service would be available to people who use iTunes but have no Apple devices.

even a monthly plan would do well

I'm sure a monthly plan on iTunes would be popular, but the main benefit I see behind this is to use it to further entice potential buyers of Apple products. As a stand-alone plan, I don't really see Apple having much if anything to gain. I would think they would make far more profit selling individual songs, than offering unlimited song downloads for a nominal price.

maybe they could start of at a reduced price for people who recently bought ipods then slowly work off into a monthly plan

I would just like to know what kind of premium we are talking here ... i wouldn't mind an iPhone at all tbh and if they tossed this in (just like ajay said) I would REALLLLLLLLY consider a purchase -- pending that its not like $500+ extra

I gues they could make a trial period, free, then people will have to pay if they like the service

must not have gone so well but it was during the time were everybody stole music now its a little differnet

Anonymous 6 years ago

well, music is stolen now the same it was before, but with different programs

but there has been a increase in legal music downloads in fact more so than when napster offered the unlimited plan and would certainly convert some of the illegal filesharers over with a low enough price

Anonymous 6 years ago

maybe because the prices have fallen
