Apple Enjoys Record Weekend as iPhone 5S and 5C Sales Surpass 9 Million Units
Even though Apple didn't increase the screen size on the iPhone 5S like many hoped it would, the device along with its polycarbonate sibling, iPhone 5C, sold like gangbusters over the weekend to the tune of over 9 million units, Apple announced today. On top of that, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running iOS 7, making it the fastest software update in history.
"This is our best iPhone launch yet?more than nine million new iPhones sold?a new record for first weekend sales," said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5S, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."
Indeed, every color option (Space Gray, Silver, and Gold) and every capacity (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB) on all three wireless carriers (AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon) is sold out at Apple's online store. New orders are listed as being available to ship in October, whereas before the weekend, ship dates were all over the map, depending on the specific model and carrier.
Apple's new model iPhone sales beats last year's iPhone 5C opening weekend by 4 million units. Having two base models to choose from this time around certainly worked in Apple's favor, but credit must also be given to Apple for continuing to expand its global distribution network. The iPhone 5S and 5C launched in more countries than ever before, including China, which has never been included in the first round of shipments.
