Apple Complaint, and Price Drop, Brings "Laptop Hunters" Ad Change

At the Worldwide Partner Conference in mid-July, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner noted that the Laptop Hunters ads are working, saying that Apple demanded Microsoft pull the ads because it (Apple) had lowered its prices:
And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business.
The Laptop Hunters series of ads have been Microsoft's most successful ad campaign in years. It's clearly made an impact on the public's perception of Windows PCs in terms of value.

That said, Microsoft has not pulled, but has edited one of the Laptop Hunters ads, the one titled "Lauren and Sue." In the ad, law student Lauren shops for a laptop priced below $1,700.

In the original version, Lauren at one point comes upon a MacBook and says "This Mac is $2,000, and that's before adding anything."

Sue, Lauren's mom chimes in with "Why would you pay twice the price?" to which Lauren replies "I wouldn't." Lauren eventually ends up with a $972 Dell laptop.

The tweaked ad removed that portion of the video, replacing it with Lauren only saying "It seems like you're paying a lot for the brand."

In reality, Microsoft no longer needs to name the price. It's made its point, that Wintel PCs are definitely cheaper than Macs. However, Apple perhaps doesn't care all that much. It's managed to claim 91% of the "premium" PC market, above $1,000. Note: that's only for retail sales, but it's still an interesting statistic.

BTW, Lauren is pretty HOT! Sorry for the tripple post. It took me a while to find the EDIT button (Hint: it's located under MORE)! Doh!Big Smile

Yay apple is finally getting squirmy just because the public is getting educated on the fact that apple is just ripping them off.

and SD, Lauren aint all that hot, to skinny for my tastes. I kinda like a woman with some meat on her bones and some sort of clevage, not a skeleton with skin.

>> "Why would you pay twice the price?"

To have a non-Vista OS pre-installed, I would guess.

At least Apple's commercials were about a product they actually made. Cheap PC hardware is not a Microsoft product. Of course, it would be pretty hard to make a commercial showing how much better Vista is than OS X.

I laugh at this debate series, and it seems to be all over the place now (PC VS. MAC). I read one last night ()and had to respond to it), where a MAC proponent was explaining to everyone how it wasn't the same (Hardware wise), because Apple PC's hardware is different. It seems that Apple PC's run on Motorola Processors, and therefore the differing MB, SB, and NB for this. I was of course only to eager to make an example of a moron out of him. Because Apple has not used Motorola processors for 2 years now (Prior to that the used Motorola processors), they use INTEL just like the predominant amount of Windows PC manufacturers.

In fact the largest and basically only thing that separates the PC market any more is the operating system only. Although a MAC may have to have specifically coded hardware (IE GPU, Peripherals), this is basically because of the BIOS, North and South Bridge, and that is all.

Either way I likened using MAC because of the name brand, as this is the largest separation now, to A man going through a midlife crisis to buying an expensive red sports car, or a teenage girl having to have the coolest brand (as reviewed by her peers) of clothes. I know they may use a somewhat differing component level on some models. However; I can build the exact same model hardware wise, for a far cheaper price point as well as 10 versions of the same hardware with differing memory, BUS, Performance protocols.

So as I see it buying a MAC is an all inclusive buy, with no personalization options. So as for the choice I can buy a boxed product, or I can build "MY Computer", like I want it top to bottom. Needless to say as we all know for the price of a POWER MAC I could build in many cases a whole house worth of PC's, and build them each to my specs, rather than look cool, because I have one MAC.

I have used all formats (Commodore 32/64. Apple IIE, TRS 80(my next door neighbor at the times), MAC G3 (Roommates), and of course all the hardware (PC(windows based), I have built). It is never the less nothing but a OS difference, and I can buy a MB Adapter and of course Leopard/Snow Leopard if I want as well as windows without the adapter!

Either way MAC claims what less than 20% of the market. I find this to be somewhat of a joke with people saying (Based on them selling the most units, in the $1000-2000 market sector, and for 1 quarter???) MAC is taking over. This is a joke in a very large proportion.

For the commercials I think M$ should have re-done the commercials to represent the actual prices as the FCC would call for it anyway. The Windows based PC's are still far more cost conscious even with the adjusted prices. So I think Microsoft ad men should have made it real on the prices, and still skewered them on the usefulness, and compatibility side of things.

^ lol, you have no idea about the number of Mac's I sell to girls who only want it bc its cool!...lol...

I have however gotten more use to the mac idea, I now dont think of them as super overpriced, just over priced... But it can be said for the best out of the box performance and loaded programs they are hard to beat (for most useres). When some one comes in and says I want a computer that will last 10 years, well I point them to a Mac, just because most people get so much junk installed on their PC's that they will run slow and well they cant fix them bc they are dumb. Mac's limit their users from installing all the dumb programs that slow PC's down... just my $.02

Yea, but if they knew what they were doing with a PC it could EASILY last MANY MANY years. If they don't want their crap to break all the time they should learn how to use it. Take a PC class at the local community college or something!
