Android Edges Out Apple To Become No. 2 Smartphone OS

The Android operating system is continuing to gain popularity among users. According to the NPD Group, Android moved past Apple and took the number-two position among smartphone operating systems in the first quarter of 2010.

Based on last quarter unit sales numbers from NPD’s wireless market research, the Android operating system moved into second place with 28 percent. Holding the number one spot is RIM’s OS with 36 percent. Apple’s OS held 21 percent of the market.

“As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones.”

As part of this promotion from Verizon Wireless, sales of the Droid, Droid Eris, and Blackberry Curve have been very strong. These strong sales have helped to keep Verizon Wireless’s smartphone sales on par with AT&T in Q1.

NPD’s Mobile Phone Track shows AT&T sold nearly a third (32 percent) of all smartphones in the first quarter. Smartphone sales at Verizon Wireless were slightly behind AT&T with 30 percent of the smartphone market. T-Mobile and Sprint followed with respective market shares of 17 percent and 15 percent.

I kind of finding the idea of Apple suing Google funny. I mean I know there is a good amount of iPhone/pad/pod users. There PC market is still under or right at 10%. Google is used on more computers than Windows though if you wanna fight with a bear and even a big one I would much rather grab the Grizzly M$ than the Kodiak G$ I think. This is not to mention Google has the websearch and now smartphone market in there pocket as well as advertising and everything else, including there own browser and small time OS (at least on the computer). I just am looking at Apple being sued by what 7 different companies or is it 5, and there all very large companies as well, and the craziness coming out of them and see them totally killing themselves. If they loose half of these lawsuit's, not to mention the Justice department, they will also probably loose at least half if not more of last years profit. This sends there stock spinning down, and then competitors are gaining on them markedly in some cases, and in others (PC's/not tablets) they never showed up to the fight.

Google: You have some smart people, so listen to this and do what you will:

Why the hell are you diluting your market by calling ChromeOS "ChromeOS"? Call it "Desktop Android" or something like that - it's all Linux underneath. Capitalizing on momentum and brand name is one of the things (in addition to a lot of questionable ethics) that got MS to where it is today. You need to skip over tablets, netbooks and get users to make this association *now* if you *ever* want an equal position on the PC desktop.

If you don't, MS and Apple will have everything patented before you get there.
