Amazon Now Offers Discounted Digital Copies of Purchased Paper Books Through Kindle MatchBook Service

Amazon on Tuesday launched its Kindle MatchBook service, which allows you to purchase -- or receive for free -- the Kindle edition of print books that you've previously purchased new from the online site. Perhaps you want to free up some space on your bookshelf and donate your dead tree copies, or maybe you're getting ready to go on vacation and don't want to clutter your suitcase with physical copies. Whatever your reason for wanting to archive your physical collection electronically, Amazon will happily oblige.

There are over 70,000 books enrolled in Kindle MatchBook. Some are free to convert, others cost $0.99, $1.99, or $2.99, Amazon says. To see if yours are eligible -- and how much it will cost for a Kindle Edition -- just head over to Amazon's Kindle MatchBook page.

"It’s been great to see the positive response to MatchBook from both readers and publishers," said Russ Grandinetti, Vice President, Kindle Content. "MatchBook enrollment has grown from 10,000 to 70,000 titles in just a few weeks and we expect it will keep expanding rapidly in the months ahead."

The vast and growing collection includes books dating back to 1995, which is when Amazon first opened its online bookstore. And just like regular e-book purchases, Kindle MatchBook copies have special features such as Whispersync, Popular Highlights, and X-Ray.
