Acer Debuts Aspire Timeline 1825PT: Half Netbook, Half Tablet PC

It's clearly the year of the Tablet PC. That was drawn into stone just as soon as Steve Jobs took the stage in California and announced that the iPad would soon be shipping. A million units later, and it's clear that the tablet has the world's collective attention, even if we're still attempting to figure out exactly where to use them in place of smartphones and netbooks.

Acer has a new machine that straddles the divide, as the Aspire Timeline 1825PT "netvertible" is half netbook, half tablet PC. Opened like a notebook, you'll never be able to tell it apart from the average 11.6" netback, but give the display a twist, and you realize you can flip the entire LCD over and lay it atop the keyboard, making it into a makeshift tablet. If you can't decide between the two form factors, this unit allows you to go 2-for-1.

It's certainly not the cheapest netbook on the market, but it's definitely cheaper than buying both a netbook and a tablet PC. Inside, you'll get a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU, integrated Intel GMA4500MHD graphics, VGA webcam, HDMI and VGA outputs, 4GB or 8GB of memory, a 250GB/320GB hard drive, Bluetooth v2.1, and Windows 7 Home Premium. These will ship in Europe first starting at around £599.99 (just under $900), though an exact U.S. release date is thus far unknown.

At $900, That is some serious money for a netbook powered by a CULV proc. Wonder what their strategy is going to be to push it. But is some one really going to buy it over the M11x. I doubt.
