500GB Of Storage For Movies And MJ's Swan Song

Michael Jackson fans in Europe who find their online film collections are taking up a bit too much space on their hard drives are in luck.

Samsung Electronics Co. announced today that the new Samsung S2 Portable, a transportable external hard drive, will come pre-loaded with Jackson's swan song, the movie "Michael Jackson's This Is It."

The King of Pop isn't the only extra the S2 will have. It has an increased capacity of 500 GB of storage and its data recording technology has been improved, Samsung officials say. The pre-loaded movie is to show how the drive is just perfect for people who are building digital movie collections. The drive will be available Feb. 22 in Europe. Other locations will be announced later.

Of course, the hard drive isn't only for your movie collections. It has Samsung Auto Backup, which can be scheduled or done while you wait, and a "SecretZone" that encrypts and stores data on a virtual drive. There's also "SafetyKey," which offers password protection.

"We are excited to present this movie starring Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time, pre-loaded on the Samsung S2 Portable," said H.S. Lee, Samsung Electronics' vice president for storage marketing.

The drive's release is timed to coincide with the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Jackson's film.

These move more capability into the Mobile or motion computing trend much like the tablets. We not only want the best we want it at all times.

Of all the movies they could have put on this HDD (which seems like any run-of-the-mill portable external harddrive), why pick this one?

Personally I'd prefer it if they added the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition trilogy on it instead.

Ooooo that would be nice.  This is still an interesting thing despite, the ok hard drive.

Maybe the Jackson estate owns Samsung, or a piece thereof? Good thing they're releasing it now, when the Jackson necrofascination hasn't yet faded. (Then again, he may turn out to be the next Elvis Presley, and people will pay to tour the triple-locked secret room at his Neverland Ranch.) (Hey! Maybe that's what this "SecretZone" feature was inspired by!)

500 GB isn't much; MicroCenter has them for $65 and up, and you could probably shave $10 off by doing it yourself. I'd imagine that a larger drive, 2 TB or so, would be more appealing to movie-storage uses. You'd have to put the Jackson memorial video (or LotR, or the complete Star Wars saga with Jar-jar Binks edited out) on it yourself, but that's a small price to pay.
