Obama Speaks Out on GTA IV

Obama Speaks Out on GTA IV

Wait, wait, Barack, it's a game.  They're not wasting real gasoline.  Oh, wait, that's not his point.

Obama's comments came during a campaign stop in Indianapolis. He told the crowd, "I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it.

"Now, this isn’t intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids," Obama continued. "Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they’re spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment. "

While he has some good points, heck it's a 10/10 game!  Come on!

even though it is a 10/10 game a 12 year old should not play it, this game is a mature game. you wouldnt want your kids watching the best porno ever made would you just because its the best one?
and its the parents fault for not spending time with their children. if parents spent time with their children and put everything in contex.

Exactly. It's up to parents to prevent their kids from playing games like GTA4. Who cares how much time a kid entertains him or herself, as long as they're doing good in school, making friends, and are generally well adjusted? Incidentally, all things that parents have the most influence in.

I hate when politicians, especially under qualified, fraction of a term senator, opportunist, blow-hards like Obama tell me (and the rest of the country) how to raise kids. If it was up to politicians, there would be no winners and losers, no competition, poor students would progress through school at the same rate as more gifted kids, and anytime they had a problem they'd turn to the government for a hand-out.

I couldn't agree more. My kid won't play gta4, not because i am against violent video games, (I'm an avid gamer) but because I'm a good parent interested in what my child is doing. As far as your point on competition right now she is playing softball that, get this, not only doesn't keep score but actually doesn't keep track of outs. Everyone bats, everyone goes home. It drives me crazy. If you don't raise a kid with a sense  of competition how will they ever have drive to succeed in this world.

In her school they actually tell the students it doesn't matter if the answer is correct as long as she can show the work and have that be correct. When she gets to middle school it gets completely flipped and the work doesn't matter but the answers do, however she's already had five years of being told just the opposite. How is she supposed to know if the answers are right if she's not being taught to check. That is why I make sure as her father that both are correct, but in her school and sports it is all about feelings and making sure no one gets hurt, it's just ridiculous.

Obama does have a good track record for defending civil liberties, in the past he hasn't condemned video games but rather advocated alternatives. Video games have become in a way for some kids the modern pacifier. How many times have you heard some annoying pre pubescent voice on Halo 3 or Counter Strike? I fully agree that parents need to take responsibility for what games their kids play. I like Obama but I haven't a clue as to what shite he's on about in the original post.

Barack Obama:
I know how hard it will be to alleviate poverty that has built up over centuries, how hard it will be to fix schools, because changing our schools will require not just money, but a change in attitudes.

We're going to have to parent better, and turn off the television set, and put the video games away, and instill a sense of excellence in our children, and that's going to take some time. New York Times, 19 February 2008

I agree with Obama,he is right that little children that play this game can be influenced in the future by its violence

And that's why it's rated for 17 year old or older only.  If a kid is playing it blame the retailer for selling it or the parents for letting them play it.  It is not made for "little children".

That is right.Obama did not take in consideration that all these games are rated and there is no problem if people respect this.

its more a problem with american media. look whats on tv constantly. drugs, sex and violence. you think a 8 year old kid wont watch the simpsons? now the simpsons has a ton of violence, sure the kids wont act it out exactly like that but it all influences them. all those shows with drugs, murder, sex and violence also influence and cause muder and such. america has the highest rate of muder in any civilized nation. thousnads more... and i personally blame the media and culture.

Wait, sorry, but color me confused on what Obama's point actually is.  Is he saying as a President he will focus on entertainment, or on raising kids, or both?  Hopefully neither... but I don't get his point.
