Tesla Model S P100D Roasts Ferraris With 100 kWh Of Ludicrous Mode Ridiculousness

Hence, the company has finally introduced the long-rumored 100 kWh battery for both the Model S sedan and the Model X crossover. This is the largest capacity battery ever offer in a Tesla vehicle, besting the 90 kWh option that was introduced last year.

When affixed to the Model S, the vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 2.5 seconds with Ludicrous Mode engaged. Tesla says this makes the vehicle the “quickest production car in the world.” The older Model S P85D could accomplish that feat in 2.8 seconds (according to Tesla), while independent testing showed that the Model S P90D could hit 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds. We can’t wait to see what happens when the Model S P100D gets into the hands of independent testers and dedicated car reviewers. As for the Model X P100D, it’s no slouch either, and is rated to do the dance in just 2.9 seconds in Ludicrous Mode.

With this new, longer-range battery, the Model S 100D and Model X P100D can travel up to 315 miles and 289 miles respectively per EPA testing guidelines.

If you’ve already ordered a Model S or Model X P90D and haven’t yet taken delivery, you can upgrade to the P100D for an additional $10,000. If you’re currently the owner of a P90D, Tesla can swap out and recycle your 90 kWh battery and will charge you $20,000 for the upgrade to 100 kWh. Yikes!

“While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development,” says Tesla to those whose jaws just hit the ground. “Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.”
