Samsung's Stunning 5.5-Inch 4K UHD Smartphone Display Was Designed For VR
Samsung recently demoed a 4K smartphone display designed for virtual reality (VR). The South Korean electronics behemoth showcased the screen at the Display Week conference in San Francisco, California. A Samsung representative confirmed that the demo was a prototype despite rumors that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 6 will have a 4K display. The display measures 5.5” with a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160), has a pixel density of 806 ppi, 350nit brightness, and 97% color gamut. It is important to note that the display seemed to be running at a slower frame rate, however, this could be adjusted before the official release.
Samsung showcased other tech at this same conference that could indirectly affect VR. It introduced “Bio Blue” which aims at decreasing the amount of blue light that screens emit. The goal is to reduce the amount of blue light from the 32 percent blasted by current currently emitted from AMOLED displays to just 6 percent.
At Display Week 2016, Samsung also showed off a 5.7-inch bendable AMOLED. The screen is 0.3mm thick, and weighs just 5 grams. It also supports "10 radius of curvature," meaning that it can be rolled up without issue to create a circle with a radius of 10mm. VR systems already come with flexible screens, however this could be another refinement.
Samsung also introduced an early Lightfield display with better resolution. The display allows you to have a truer sense of depth in an image and is complete with parallax. There are currently no specs available for the Lightfield. The Bio Blue, bendable AMOLED, and Lightfield could provide significant improvements for the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Rift.
Samsung recently included a Gear VR headset with new Galaxy S7/S7 Edge pre-orders in select territories, along with Injustice game credit and Oculus VR content vouchers for Batman-Themed Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition. The company certainly seems to be looking at “The Next Big Thing” with this focus and is eager to make improvements to the latest technology.
