Huawei Launches P8max Smartphone With Obscenely Large 6.8-Inch Display

Does your smartphone have a 5.5 or 5.7-inch screen? That’s amateur hour. Think that you’re the king of the hill with 6-inch Nexus 6? Guess again; that’s mere child’s play. How does 6.8-inches sound to you, because that’s exactly what Huawei is delivering with its new flagship P8max.

That’s right, the P8max is packing in a nearly 7-inch 16:9 display in a device that is just 6.8mm thick. Unfortunately — and somewhat surprisingly — the JDI IPS-Neo display is relegated to a 1920x1080 resolution instead of the QHD resolution that we’re more accustomed to seeing on smaller flagship smartphone that range in size from 5 inches to 6 inches.

Under the hood, you won’t find a Qualcomm Snapdragon or even the MediaTek processors that are becoming increasingly popular with Chinese smartphone OEMs. Instead, you’ll find a HiSilicon Kirin 930 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM in the 16GB version of the P8 Max. It features four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.5GHz and four custom Cortex A53e cores clocked at 2GHz. The 64GB P8max comes with a Kirin 935 processor that has its four A53e cores clocked at 2.2GHz.

Rear camera duties are handled by a 13MP Sony sensor that Huawei claims offers “best-in-class” optical image stabilization (OIS) and the world’s first four-color RGBW sensor. Coupled with an advanced image signal processor and dual-tone flash, Huawei says that the camera has DSLR level image quality. We’ll believe it when we see it, but it will take quite a bit to top the high water mark set by both the Apple iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S6/Galaxy S6 Edge in the photo quality department.

Most other features are pretty much run of the mill when it comes to current flagship Android phones which means you’ll find a 5MP front-facing camera, aluminum unibody construction, Cat-4 LTE, Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11n (surprisingly, no 802.11ac support), a microSD slot, and Android Lollipop 5.0.2 (with Huawei’s EmotionUI 3.1 layered on top). One rather impressive stat that you won’t find on many other smartphones is its massive battery, which has a capacity of 4360 mAh (for comparison, the Motorola Droid MAXX “only” has a 3500 mAh battery).

The Huawei P8max will be available in 30 countries around the globe and will be priced at €549 for the 16GB model and €649 for the 64GB model.
