Gigabyte Teases Extreme Edition GeForce GTX 1080 Slated For June
We always knew Pascal was going to be a big deal, but we couldn't have predicted that NVIDIA would come out of the gate with a pair of graphics cards that are each faster than a Titan X, one of which will be priced at $379 when it debuts later this month. Now consider this—as exciting as the GeForce GTX 1070 and GeForce GTX 1080 are, imagine the level of awesome they'll bring when NVIDiA's hardware partners tweak the reference designs and install fancy coolers.
Count Gigabyte among the ones planning something special. Gigabyte is practically bursting at the seams trying to hold back its own excitement, and it's found an outlet on social media to tease eager enthusiasts of what it has in store. In a picture posted to its Facebook page, Gigabyte tips the imminent release of an "Xtreme" edition GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card.

Even without any modifications or tweaks, the GeForce GTX 1080 is an "Xtreme" card as configured. It features 2,560 CUDA cores and 8GB of Micron's new GDDR5X memory. According to NVIDIA, it's faster than a pair of GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards configured in SLI.
Just as remarkable is that it's not a power hog. The move to a 16nm FinFET process technology is paying dividends across the board, with the GeForce GTX 1080 carrying a rated TDP of just 180W. It only requires a single 8-pin PCI Express connector!
Whether or not Gigabyte's Xtreme edition increases that requirement remains to be seen. At minimum, we're expecting a custom cooling solution, though don't be surprised if Gigabyte gooses the clockspeeds as well.
In any event, we'll find out in June when the GeForce GTX debuts starting at $599.
