Sony PlayStation 4 Sales Top 30 Million Worldwide

Sony is riding high as a kite heading into the holiday season on the knowledge that it's sold over 30.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles to date. Having launched two years ago, the PS4 is demonstrating a rate a growth and adoption that's unprecedented in the history of PlayStation hardware, Sony says.

"We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We are committed to bringing engaging games and entertainment services to users worldwide. Thanks to the support of our partners, PS4 continues to be the premier platform for game and interactive entertainment innovation."

How does the PS4 compare to competing consoles in terms of unit sales? Unfortunately Microsoft hasn't provided any recent shipment data for its Xbox One system, though a rough estimate by VGChartz pegs the number at 15.6 million (it also estimates the PS4 at 28.4 million units sold, which we know is low). And as of September, Nintendo said its Wii U sales were at 10.7 million units.

The PS4 is enjoying a comfortable lead in the modern generation console wars, and as the holiday shopping frenzy gets ready to kick off with Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, all three console makers are likely to increase their footprints by millions of systems.

Of course, it's the games that help sell the hardware, and on that front Sony said there are several "highly anticipated titles" on tap. They include Dragon Quest Builders, Ryu Ga Gotoku, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters Edition, Gravity Rush Remaster, and Unchartered 4: A Thief's End.
