What Samsung did with its flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge devices amounts to pulling a rabbit out of its hat. Consider that just prior to launch, Samsung went into reorganization mode and fired three top level executives (but sparing mobile boss J.K. Shin) after being left with excess Galaxy S5 inventory. Consumers had grown bored and indifferent to the same design recycled with newer parts.
Then came the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, a pair of handsets that traded all that plastic construction found on previous Galaxy phones for a metal and glass design with a premium feel. It came at the expense at features such as a removable battery and microSD card slot, but consumers reacted well to Samsung's decision to favor form over function. Of course, it's all relative.
Here's the thing -- Samsung expects to sell 45 million Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets by the end of the year. Yes, a whopping 45 million! No small potatoes, right? Well, we now live in a wireless world where selling 45 million smartphones in less than nine full months is merely considered "respectable." Seriously.
"Samsung continues to struggle at the low-to-mid end, while the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge combined look on course to reach a respectable 45 million units this year," EE Times noted, citing a report released by Deutsche Bank.

Some analysts even predicted as many as 70 million, perhaps letting the excitement of the new design get the better of them.
It's a cutthroat industry and if you're not on top, it's hard to get respect. Selling 45 million units in three quarters won't get Samsung on top, not when Apple's seeing record iPhone shipments led by the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
