Apple May Finally Kill Dreaded 16GB SKU For Future iPhones
If we're to be blunt, running out of storage space on a smartphone sucks, and it sucks harder when there's no convenient way to add more storage. Such is the case with every mode iPhone Apple has ever produced, all of which lack a microSD card slot. And in this modern era, including a paltry 16GB of storage on the base model is a punch to the silly bits. Thankfully that's about to change.
We'd like to think that Apple finally saw the light, though it could just have easily been motivated to bump up the storage on its base model by the recent first ever year-over-year decline in iPhone shipments. Whatever the reason, The Wall Street Journal seems to have it on some kind of authority that Apple's doubling the storage on the base model of its next generation iPhone—presumably the iPhone 7—to 32GB. All we can say is, it's about damn time!
Why did Apple wait this long to address one of the biggest criticized aspects of the iPhone of the past several years? Good question. Apple makes a decent profit on every iPhone model it sells, and doubling the base storage to 32GB even with NAND flash memory was a little more expensive than it is now wouldn't have put the Cupertino outfit in the poor house. That said, increasing the storage at this point gives Apple something to hype at its next iPhone event, along with the introduction of a 256GB model, which WSJ also says will be a reality.
Beyond the storage upgrades, you can expect the next iPhone to sport a faster SoC with improved CPU and graphics performance, a better camera (it's said the iPhone 7 Plus model might get a dual-lens camera), a thinner body that's water resistant, and of course the move from a 3.5mm audio jack to a Lightning port, thereby rendering your current headset obsolete (for use on iPhones, anyway).
Apple also seems to introduce a standout feature with every iPhone release, one that it dumps in the hype machine and cranks the dial to 11. Whatever that ends up being this time around, you don't have long to wait to find out out. Expect Apple to announce the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September or October.
