Samsung Galaxy S 4 Announced In NYC: 5" 1080p Display, 1.9GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon, LTE, Coming In April

It's here -- Samsung's next big thing. After loads of pomp and circumstance, plenty of rumors, and a mega event held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Samsung's Galaxy S 4 is a reality. It's the latest in the Galaxy legacy, but perhaps more importantly, it's the first Galaxy phone to garner Apple-like attention. Never before has an Android-based phone received this much mainstream attention, and if you're looking for a powerhouse, this is it. While the overall design and form factor hasn't changed much, the internals and the software has been advanced.

At a glance, the 5" Galaxy S 4 is a mishmash between the Galaxy S III and the Note II. It straddles the two, only getting a touch larger in order to not completely infringe on the Note's territory. The phone weighs 130g, measures 7.9mm thick, and will be available in two colors (Black Mist and White Forest). In the coming months, additional colors will be added. The phone is equipped with a 5" Full HD Super AMOLED display -- that's 1080p on a phone, with 441ppi. Talk about dense. On the rear, there's a 13MP camera, while the front-facing camera is a 2MP affair. Moreover, the LTE version supports up to 6 different band sets which allows it to function in most LTE coverage areas as well as enabling global LTE roaming. Furthermore, TDD/FDD LTE Dual Mode version will be introduced later this year. It'll ship with Android 4.2.2 (including Google Now), but that Eye Scroll feature that was rumored is nowhere to be found.


Additionally, there's 2GB of memory, 16/32/64GB of internal storage, a microSD slot (supporting up to 64 additional gigabytes), and a couple of CPU options depending on region. Select areas will see a Exynos 5 Octa at 1.6GHz, while others see a 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, but Samsung isn't clarifying which version will ship in the U.S. Carrier support is something to gloat about, the the phone set to ship on over 100, including AT&T, T-Mobile USA, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, USCC and Cricket in America. There's also a removable battery cover that houses a 2,600mAh cell.

Another big mystery is pricing. Per usual, Samsung's going to let its respective carrier partners spill the beans on price. We're guessing it'll be between $200 and $300 on contract, with initial shipments to start next month.
