AMD Launches World’s First Desktop Processor At 5GHz, 8-Core AMD FX-9590 Unveiled

AMD is stepping up its efforts on the CPU front by announcing two new FX-series chips, the FX-9590 and FX-9370. The company claims that the FX-9590 is the world’s first commercially available processor clocked at 5GHz (Max Turbo), and the FX-9370 isn’t far behind at 4.7GHz(Max Turbo).

Based on the Piledriver architecture, the 8-core processors are unlocked so gamers can push the already-high CPU clock even further. They also feature AMD Turbo Core 3.0, which is designed to optimize performance across all of the CPU’s cores.

AMD isn’t offering up too many additional details on the FX-9590 and FX-9370, although of course they’re designed for the high-end gaming market--which is a space in which AMD has lost ground to Intel in recent years. The company is not conceding the fight for desktop gaming, though, and these chips look to be high performers.

AMD FX Unlocked

AMD didn’t announce plans for when or if you’ll be able to buy these processors outright; for now, they’re only available through system integrators such as MAINGEAR, which just announced that it will offer the FX-9590 and FX-9370 as options in its MAINGEAR SHIFT line of gaming desktops.

I want to see how much higher it'll go under water.

I set up a fx-8150 to run at 5ghz with an H100, and I run my i7-3770k at 4.8, so if there isn't a lot of overhead past the 5.0 mark, then I don't know if it's worth it.

gay phenom ii was better? im not sure a 3.6 ghz 6 core would perform better than a 5 ghz 8 core.............

In the last benchmarks i saw, the highest rated AMD processor had the equivalent processing capability of a quad core I5. Are there any benchmarks comparing this processor and the Haswell Line yet?

diggity0 one year ago

About as impressive as a 5.0 GHz Pentium 4.

Until a detailed test from a reliable tester is published, none of us know anything at all....

The TDP rumors on this are interesting. they seem to point to 200W+ thats going to be a hell of a hot chip to keep cool.

TechReport says 220W

GameFront says 200W

ExtremeTech is leaning to 200W

WTF... This is awwwwweeesome.

I'm not willing to drop $1K on a CPU. :-\

I'm normally a big fan of AMD but if I ever did buy a CPU this powerful I would most likely buy intel. It's upsetting to see this price so high.

Though I have yet to see the benchmark comparison of the CPU with an intel CPU with equivalent price... That may sway me a bit.

As Henri says, it's all speculation until we see legitimate analysis by responsible review sites.

How about a review HH? Smile

5.0 ghz doesn't necessarily make it faster than other chips. It may look good on paper, but you have to see it in action to know it's the real deal.

This thread is over a year old.

Both of these CPUs are out and they're kind of good, but not awesome. I've helped two people with them out with their problems.

One had to be RMA'd because of a bad memory controller.

The prices have dropped considerably.

My bad didn't look at the date. I thought the 5.0 ghz processor looked familiar. It's a shame though, was getting excited about new AMD processors. D:

hahaha I read the title and was like..."huh? I swore this already happened??" :)

I wouldn't mind picking this up in a year after things have been tested and benchmarked. I'd love to push this one as far as it will go and see how fast it can actually be.
