$100 Price Cut On Microsoft Surface Pro Is Permanent

When Microsoft debuted its Surface Pro tablets, the devices seemed great--except for the eye-popping price tags--which is something that Microsoft eventually acknowledged by way of temporarily cutting the cost of the 64GB and 128GB Surface Pros by $100. (Microsoft also slashed the price of the Surface RT by $150.) Now, the Surface Pro price cut is permanent.

The company told Neowin that the 64GB and 128GB versions will indeed henceforth cost $799 and $899 respectively. The 256GB version gets a $100 price cut, too. Further, Touch Covers will cost $40 less than before, so you can snag one for $79.

Microsoft also slashed $50 off of Surface RT bundles, which will now start at $399.

Competing with the like of the iPad seems to be more difficult than perhaps Microsoft anticipated. Dropping prices is a good part of that strategy.

At those prices they're also competing with the entire laptop market. There are a lot of good laptops and even ultrabooks to be had at that price range, and they have better features and much better battery life. Maybe if MS puts Haswell chips in Surface they could be more competitive, but there’s just too much competition to make these stand out. I do like the concept; I just don’t think Surface is there yet. MS needs to have something drastically better or drastically cheaper to break into this market and be successful. This is where their business model fails, because then they run the risk of alienating the OEMs. And this is why Android tablets have exploded; they offer more features and cost less than iPads.

Can't say I disagree with you. I think if MS was able to price these just under the iPad and somewhere in the range of a half-decent laptop, they'd sell buckets of them. $879 (Pro plus Touch Cover) is just too much IMO.

It's a good product they just need it at the right price and that was MS biggest problem... the price.

The way the kick stand and the keyboard work is just awesome however they need to get it to market so they should have made it dirty cheap from the start to get it out there.

They'll need to drop the price much more to impact the market like they want to.

Other Tablets have a lot to offer for much less money. Once people buy another Tablet, they're locked into it for good. (almost for good)

Does that mean these prices remain once the Pro switches to haswell? I hope so that would be great news for me. Wish type covers had dropped in price too....

It's almost like they don't think this product is competing with Android. Which is cheaper, and imo better.
