Sony Warns VAIO Owners To Avoid Windows 10, Drivers Won’t Be Ready Until October
Anyone who possesses a valid Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license is eligible to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. That includes owners of Sony VAIO machines, though if you're rocking a VAIO, you're strongly urged to put off upgrading. Sony says it hasn't worked out proper drivers for Windows 10 just yet and is asking owners to be patient for at least a couple of months.
"Although Microsoft is offering the Windows 10 upgrade, it is strongly recommended that you wait to install it until the drivers and installation instructions are available for your VAIO PC," Sony warns on its support page for VAIO systems.
Sony's support page also contains a roadmap for when drivers and applications will be updated to run properly on Windows 10. Barring any changes, VAIO PCs that shipped with Windows 8.1 will have all the necessary updates to upgrade to Windows 10 in October, while those with VAIO systems that came with Windows 8 pre-installed will have to wait until November. Sony doesn't yet know when it will have updated drivers for systems that shipped with Windows 7 SP1.
In the meantime, Sony suggests bookmarking its support page and checking it before upgrading.
Owners of VAIO PCs will undoubtedly be disappointed at having to wait a few months to upgrade to Windows 10, especially since early impressions of Microsoft's flagship OS are so positive. At the same time, it's nice to see Sony continuing to support VAIO systems after having sold off its VAIO brand PC business to a Japanese firm in 2014.
