Microsoft Delivers Windows 10 Redstone 2 Preview Build 14926 For PC And Mobile
After rolling out the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 last month, Microsoft's been looking ahead to Redstone 2, the codename for one of two more major upgrades Microsoft has planned for next year. Windows Insiders subscribed to receive Fast ring updates had the opportunity to play with a very early Preview build of Redstone 2 in August, and now right around a month later, Microsoft is serving up another one to Fast ring subscribers for both PC and Mobile.
Coinciding with the release is the expiration of "really old" Insider Previews, which will start to see build expiration notifications today and everyday until October 1st. At that point, PCs running older Insider Preview builds will reboot every three hours, and then stop rebooting altogether on October 15. If you're running an expired build, Microsoft says to upgrade to its newest Redstone 2 Preview (Build 14926) as quick as possible. None of this affects Slow ring and Release ring subscribers.
Should you decide to install the latest build, you'll notice a few new things, one of which is an experimental snooze feature in Edge. The snooze action is found on browser tabs in Edge and serve as a way to set a Cortana reminder on the website you are viewing.
"People often keep tabs open in their browser indefinitely as a 'to do' list, and do not close those tabs until the action associated with that website is complete. This feature lets you put a site into a Cortana reminder that will show up as a notification and in Action Center, allowing you to quickly open that site in Microsoft Edge when you’re ready to get back to it," Microsoft explains.
The latest Preview build also makes upgrading a little easier. One of the complaints Microsoft heard from Windows Insiders that the apps that come presinstalled in Windows will reinstall after each upgrade and flush their previous settings. Now those settings will be preserved, saving Insiders a bit of housekeeping.
One of the neatest features (in this editor's opinion) is that typing in a PIN to log into Windows will always work, even when the Number Lock feature is turned off. That means no more rapidly banging away on the number pad only to discover that nothing you just typed registered in the login box.
"With this build, regardless of your Num Lock state, numbers will be input if you’re typing into the pin password field. Let us know what you think!," Microsoft says.
On the Mobile side, Microsoft updated the Wi-Fi settings page via Settings > Network & wireless > Wi-Fi to match how it works on PC. It's a move towards unifying the experience on PC and Mobile, though it's not yet complete—Microsoft is still porting over functionality.
As always, the latest Preview build also includes a bunch of fixes. In this case, there's over a dozen fixes for PC and Mobile, including an issue that was causing Adobe Acrobat Reader to crash during launch.
