LG Preps ‘Super Premium Phone’ For Launch Later This Year

Most of the attention in the smartphone space gets placed on Samsung's flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets and Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models. It's sometimes easy to forget that there are other mobile phone makers competing in the high end space too, and to help consumers remember that fact, LG Electronics is readying a new flagship device.

Apparently LG's next mobile handset won't just be a smartphone, but a "super premium phone," which the company plans to release sometime this year (sooner rather than later). The mention of a super premium phone has stirred up speculation on what LG has up its sleeve -- a G4 Pro model is one possibility, or it could go with a G5.

LG finds itself in a tough spot. The company had high hopes for its G4 model, a fine device in its own right (check out our review). But at the same time, the phablet sized device with its 5.5-inch Quad HD display sits in the shadow of the iPhone 6 Plus and anticipation of Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy Note 5. And speaking of the latter, LG also has to figure out if it wants (and is able) to release its super premium device before the Galaxy Note 5 debuts.

As for the hardware, rumors have LG's next flagship phone sporting a giant 5.8-inch or 6-inch Quad HD display powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 System-on-Chip (SoC) and 4GB of RAM. It's also rumored to have 32GB or 64GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, a 27-megapixel rear-facing camera, 8-megapixel front shooter, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and of course Android 5.1 Lollipop.
