Domino’s Gets Approval For Fresh Pizza Deliveries By Drone In New Zealand
One day soon you may look up and say, "It's a bird...it's a plane...no,
it's a pie in the sky!" That's because Domino's Pizza has partnered with
Flirtey, a tech startup that specializes in delivery by drone, to
launch the world's first commercial pizza-by-drone delivery program. The
effort kicks off in New Zealand and from there, well, the sky's the
limit.
"Launching the first commercial drone delivery service in the world is a landmark achievement for Flirtey and Domino's, soon you will be able to order a Flirtey to deliver your pizza on-demand," said Matt Sweeny, CEO of Flirtey. "New Zealand has the most forward-thinking aviation regulations in the world, and with the new U.S. drone regulations taking effect on Aug. 29, Flirtey is uniquely positioned to bring the same revolutionary Flirtey drone delivery service to partners within the United States."
Domino's currently operates more than 2,000 stores in seven markets, including New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Japan, and Germany. Flirtey, meanwhile, recently demonstrated its ability to deliver medical supplies and samples by way of its proprietary drone from a barge to an medical camp on land.
As in that case, the delivery drone that has the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles high-fiving each other in excitement is made from carbon fiber, aluminum, and 3D printed components. It's a lightweight contraption with autonomous operation. Using proprietary software and GPS, pizza (and other cargo) gets delivered and lowered to the ground from a tether. If the battery should run low or the GPS signal drops out, the drone aborts its delivery mission and returns home.
"The Flirtey drone delivery service is another example of Domino's pushing the boundaries to deliver pizzas to customers and an extension of being at the forefront of innovation," Domino's Pizza said.
Flirtey's done this sort of thing before. Earlier this year, it partnered with 7-Eleven to demonstrate a drone delivering various munchies to a customer in Reno, Nevada. The cargo included a chicken sandwich, doughnuts, coffee, and a Slurpee.
Domino's didn't elaborate on its plan to bring pizza-by-drone delivery to the U.S. or talk about the fees that might be involved.
