It was a year ago this month that Sony sold off its Vaio PC brand to a Japanese investment firm, freeing itself up to concentrate more fully on the ever growing mobile market. The long-term impact of that decision has yet to be determined, but here in the short-term, Sony has a couple of slick new handsets it's shipping to U.S. customers—the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact, both of which are unlocked. "Building a stable business in the U.S. market continues to be an important area of focus in helping Sony Mobile pursue profit by optimizing business scale. We are excited about the introduction of... Read more...
Sony doesn't appear to be having any trouble selling PlayStation 4 consoles—as of a month ago, Sony had sold just shy of 36 million units—but it may see a flurry of sales from eager Uncharted 4: A Thief's End fans by offering a limited edition themed version to commemorate the game's release on April 26, 2016. Central to the bundle is a gray and blue 500GB capacity PS4 console featuring a silk-screen image of Nathan Drake on one of its sides. It also comes with a matching DualShock 4 controller and a physical (not digital) copy of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on Blu-ray. For added bling,... Read more...
Microsoft doesn’t have any intention of revealing Xbox One sales numbers, as the company has decided to keep those figures under lock and key (Microsoft last gave an update in November 2014, when it had sold a total of 10 million Xbox One consoles). On the other hand, Sony has been trumpeting its PlayStation 4 sales numbers whenever possible. Sony last gave us an update on the PlayStation 4 in early January, indicating that it had sold 35.9 million consoles since it was first launched in late 2013. Interestingly, Electronic Arts Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen filled in the blanks for us... Read more...

Apple, Samsung, and Sony are among a list of "major electronic brands" that Amnesty International, a human rights group, says failed to perform "basic checks to ensure that cobalt mined by child laborers has not been used in the their products." Specifically, cobalt is a critical material used in lithium-ion batteries. "The glamorous shop displays and marketing of state of the art technologies are a stark contrast to the children carrying bags of rocks, and miners in narrow man made tunnels risking permanent lung damage," said Mark Dummett, Business & Human Rights Researcher at Amnesty International.... For anyone keeping score of the modern generation console wars, it appears that Sony winning the battle of sales against rival Microsoft, as has been the case since the beginning. What's interesting is not just that Sony's sold more PlayStation 4 consoles than Microsoft has of its Xbox One, but that the disparity might be as high as 100 percent. It takes a bit of jumping around the web to arrive at that conclusion. The assumption also requires a reliance on unofficial information, which is to say you should take all this with a few grains of salt (at least a pinch). And rounding our disclaimer... Read more...
This isn't the kind of news Uncharted fans wanted to see right before Christmas, but at the same time, it's not too surprising. Via the official PlayStation Blog, we're told straight out that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is being delayed yet again, this time until April 26, 2016. While any delay is unfortunate, many gamers have come to appreciate that it's actually better when game developers take extra time to perfect (as well as can be) their games. Need we bring up examples like Fallout 4 or Batman: Arkham Knight? The Uncharted developers want to make sure this fourth and final installment proves... Read more...
Since the original iPhone was released in 2007, we have seen some incredible advances in smartphone processing and GPU power along with a wealth of features improvement (faster Wi-Fi and cellular speeds, larger and higher resolution displays). However, battery technology, for the most part, hasn’t kept up with the advances made in miniaturizing and producing higher-performing silicon. Over the years, we’ve listened to plenty of promises about the next battery breakthrough just over the horizon, and today, Sony is the latest to string us along. Sony is currently an underdog as a battery supplier,... Read more...
Microsoft was quite ecstatic about the Xbox One’s October sales win; the first time in many months that it had overtaken the long-time sales champ: the PlayStation 4. However, Microsoft had some big league help during the month of October thanks to the release of Halo 5: Guardians. But it appears that Microsoft’s victory lap has been cut short. According to new numbers released by NPD, Sony’s PlayStation 4 snatched the sales crown back from Microsoft for the month of November. Not even Halo 5 could save the Xbox One this time around, and platform-exclusive Rise of The Tomb Raider was of no help... Read more...
Never mind that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both becoming specks in the rear view mirror, the deals, they just keep coming. One of them comes from Sony, which is getting into the holiday spirt by carving the subscription cost of its PlayStation Now streaming service to a hundred bucks, for a limited time. The temporary reduction goes into effect December 8 (tomorrow). It's a 55 percent savings off the regular monthly subscription, and though it has to be paid in full via one lump sum, it works out to less than $9 per month. Also worth noting is that the discounted subscription isn't just for... Read more...
Last month, Microsoft rolled out a great update for the Xbox One that opened up the ability to play some Xbox 360 games on. One of the best things about this update is that the functionality is free, and because you can use your own game discs, there's no extra purchase involved at all. Today, Sony has followed suit, but has gone about things in a much different manner. With a new PlayStation Store update, Sony has introduced its first eight PlayStation 2 titles available on the PS4. If you have the original game disc for any of these, it won't matter: you'll need to shell out for these... Read more...
Just over a week ago, Sony announced a $300 PlayStation 4 bundle that was available from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday via its retail partners. Apparently, sales figures during this promotion were pleasing to Sony, as the company has decided to extend the offer and add an additional bundle to the mix. Starting December 6th, Sony will offer the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Star Wars Battlefront Standard Edition bundles for a low $299.99. The promotion lasts through December 19th, so if you’re at all interested in picking up a PlayStation 4, now is the time. It’s also likely that... Read more...
Toward the beginning of the year, it was revealed that Microsoft was going to "unlock" the seventh core on the Xbox One's processor, enabling developers to eke just a bit more performance out of the console and offer more flexibility at resource utilization. It appears that Microsoft's move would inevitably be followed by Sony, as reports are now coming in that this will be made available on the PlayStation 4 as well. This subtle change was highlighted in the latest changelog for the FMOD sound engine. Labeled as a "LowLevel API" update, it reads, "PS4 - Added FMOD_THREAD_CORE6 to allow access... Read more...
If you were having trouble connecting to the PlayStation Network yesterday, you might have the hacking group Lizard Squad to thank. An hour after the group's founder posted to Twitter that "itz bouta rain packets", Sony's "Ask PlayStation" account tweeted that it was investigating connectivity issues. Lizard Squad either delivered on its promise, or is trying to reap the benefits of a major coincidence. Video games are always a hot item on big shopping days like Black Friday, so it can be expected that networks like PSN are going to get hammered simply due to the fact that so many people are trying...
