Motorola Moto G4 Plus Ships With Marshmallow, But Is Upgradeable To Android O In 2017
Lenovo just disclosed that Moto G4 Plus smartphone will be upgraded in 2017 to Android O. This leak has come ahead of Google’s announcement of Android O, which should be deployed over a year from now.
Google announced Android N far ahead of schedule. Instead of waiting for this year’s Google I/O conference, Google made the Android N Developer Preview available as an OTA update in early March. The Android N Developer Preview currently supports the Nexus, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, and the Pixel C. Some Android N improvements include multi-window support, direct reply notification support for all apps, an improved Doze mode, and support for Java 8.
Many are skeptical that the Moto G4 Plus will indeed receive the Android O upgrade, especially since Android O has yet to be announced. Motorola has promised upgrades before, but later dropped the ball. In October 2014, Motorola promised that the DROID Ultra, MAXX, and Mini would all receive Android 5.0 Lollipop. Motorola failed to release the 5.0 update to its DROID line, but said in January of 2015 that it was all happening “soon.” It once again dangled the Lollipop/Marshmallow carrot in October 2015. It was only in February 2016 that Motorola finally admitted that they would not be upgrading the DROID Ultra, MAXX, and Mini to Lollipop or any other newer Android update.
The Moto G4 Plus has a 5.5-inch 1080p display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor paired with 2GB of RAM, a 3000 mAh battery, TurboPower fast charging, 16MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture and laser autofocus, and a fingerprint sensor. It also includes 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.1, LTE connectivity, microUSB connectors, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It is 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, with the latter two doubling on-board RAM to 4GB.
The Moto G4 Plus will be launched in mid-June. There are currently no U.S. prices available.
