If virtual reality headsets are going to truly break into the mainstream market, there needs to be a lot of content for consumers to devour, and it has to be easily accessible. In recognition of those requisites, HTC's Vive team today announced the global launch of Viveport, its own app store for a variety of VR content and experiences including, education, music, sports, and more.

To kick things off, many of what HTC calls "super-hit" titles are available at a discounted rate of just $1 for the next 48 hours. These include Mars Odyssey (normally $7.99), The Music Room Mini (normally $29), Firebird - La Peri (normally $9.99), and theBlue (normally $9.99). There are also a bunch of titles that permanently cost $1, along with many free apps.

"We believe Viveport is the place where customers will start their journey into new virtual reality experiences," said Rikard Steiber, President of Viveport. "Now, fans in over 30 countries will join us on a fantastic voyage, as they get to experience amazing VR Apps published by the best content creators in the industry. In addition to debuting new Viveport Premieres, we are also rewarding our community with a special 48-hour launch celebration, where several marquee titles will be available for a special price of $1."

The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are the two most hyped VR headsets out there. HTC has been savvy with its foray into VR, having partnered with Valve to showcase compatible gaming titles in Steam. By opening Viveport, HTC creates a one-stop shop for other VR experiences while giving itself a chance to grow its own marketplace. It's a low-risk endeavor with potential big upsides.

Viveport also includes "Premier" titles, which consists of new and updated content from top VR creators. Premier titles launch first on Viveport, giving HTC's app store a window of exclusivity on some content. Right now that includes new content from Everest VR, Google Spotlight Stories' Pearl, Lifeliqe, Stonehenge VR, The Music Room, and more.
