Windows 10 Creators Update Arrives Spring 2017 With Focus On 3D Content Creation And Game Streaming

At today’s Windows 10 keynote, Windows chief Terry Myerson announced that the next version of Windows 10 will ship next spring, and it will be called Windows 10 Creators Update. "With the Creators Update, we asked ourselves what can 3D do to unleash the creator in each of us,” said Myerson.

With the Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft’s mantra is that “3D for Everyone”. To help kicks off your creative juices, Microsoft has introduced Paint 3D, which is a thorough revamp of the imaging tool that we all have used at some point during its three decades of existence. We’ve already detailed the app thanks to leaks, but Microsoft has designed the Universal Windows app to be accessible by even 3D newbs and comes with both a pen- and touch-friendly user interface.

Don’t expect for Paint 3D to replace traditional professional apps like Photoshop or Illustrator, but it has just enough to functionality to help folks get their feet wet with 3D object creation and manipulation. Microsoft has also added 3D functionality to the always popular PowerPoint app to make your presentations come alive.

Microsoft also announced that its hardware partners — including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo — will be shipping their own Creators Update virtual reality headsets to bolster the 3D experience within Windows 10. All of these headsets will support six degrees of freedom sensors and will start at just $299.

On the gaming side of things, Microsoft is really making some major updates to the Xbox app for the Windows 10 Creators Update. Microsoft is leveraging its Beam acquisition to build game broadcasting right into the Xbox app. Microsoft is clearly going after Amazon’s Twitch in the games broadcasting sector, so it’ll be interesting to see how popular this functionality becomes.

You’ll also be able to create Custom Tournaments with Xbox Live. "We want to give gamers the ability to create their own tournaments and challenges,” explained Microsoft’s Jenn McCoy. These tournaments can work across Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms

For the third pillar of Windows 10 Creators Update, Microsoft says that it wants the people that you are closest to you to be at the center of your Windows 10 experience. With the Windows 10 Creators Update, all of your favorite people can “reside” in your Windows 10 taskbar. Then, sharing with those people can be as simple as dragging and dropping content on their avatar. Microsoft says that this is the “fastest way to share with the most important people in your life anywhere in Windows."

Overall, the Windows 10 Creators Update looks like a pretty thorough revamp of Windows 10 and we’re sure to see even more of what’s in store for users over the new few months (you’ve already seen some features that weren’t discussed today). And as those features get announced, we’ll be sure to keep you abreast of what’s hot and what’s not.
