Treyarch Puts Kibosh On Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Single-Player Campaign For Xbox 360, PS3

Yesterday, we received great news from Activision with the formation of the Call of Duty World League, which will launch in January 2016. Today, however, we’re getting some not-so-great news for owners of last generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gaming consoles.

Treyarch announced today that the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will not feature a single-player campaign mode. Treyarch explains that “delivering the best possible gameplay experience on all platforms is always our highest priority,” but that it “could not be faithfully recreated on old generation hardware.”

“With that in mind, Black Ops 3 PS3 and Xbox 360 players can continue to look forward to a new experience of Black Ops 3 multiplayer, including the new momentum-based, chain-movement system, as well as the all-new Specialist class of 9 Black Ops soldiers, which fundamentally change the way players engage in combat.”

Treyarch goes on to attempt to lift the spirits of disappointed Xbox 360 and PS3 gamers by letting them know that the 1940’s film-noir inspired “Shadows of Evil” zombie mode will still be included.

Given that most gamers are likely going to spend most of their time running and gunning in multiplayer mode anyway, the decision to remove the single-player gameplay was probably the best move. We can’t say that we really blame Treyarch, considering how old both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are these days (the former first launched in November 2005, while the latter debuted in November 2006).

We must also consider that both the current generation Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are both nearing their two-year anniversaries, so many developers figure that gamers have already (or will soon be) migrating over to the newer, more powerful gaming platforms. And given the enticing promotions that Microsoft has bestowed upon the Xbox One in recent months, the price of entry for current generation console gaming isn’t all that high.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches on November 6th.
