Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab S2 Android Tablets With QXGA AMOLED Displays, Shipping August
Whether your old tablet is starting to spit and sputter or you're looking to buy a slate for the first time, you have a lot of options to choose from. And if you can hold off until next month, you can add Samsung's newly unveiled Galaxy Tab S2 in two different size options -- 9.7 inches and 8 inches -- to the list of potential candidates.
The ongoing trend among mobile device makers is to build increasingly thin and light models, and according to Samsung, the Galaxy Tab S2 boasts the thinnest and lightest metal frame of its size on the market. It has a thickness of just 5.6mm and checks in at just 389g for the 9.7-inch version and 256g for the 8-inch model. Those metrics trump Apple's iPad Air 2, which is 6.1mm thick and weights 437g (Wi-Fi + cellular model weighs 444g).
"The Galaxy Tab S2 is not only our thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever, it also gives users quick, easy access to a wealth of superior viewing and productivity features," said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics. "We believe the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the most complete personal visual device designed for consumers to carry and use anywhere."
Both Galaxy Tab S2 models bring a Super AMOLED display with a 2048x1536 (QXGA) resolution to the viewing party. Samsung says the display offers 94 percent coverage of the RGB color space, making the tablet particularly well suited for viewing detailed photos.
Other shared specs include a octa-core Exynos 5433 SoC (quad 1.9GHz + quad 1.3GHz), 3GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 BLE, various sensors (accelerometer, finger scanner, gyroscope, compass, hall sensor, and RGB sensor), optional LTE connectivity, and Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Other than size and weight (and presumably price), the 9.7-inch and 8-inch models differ in battery size -- the former sports a 5,870 mAh battery and the latter uses a smaller 4,000 mAh.
Samsung didn't announce pricing details for the Galaxy Tab S2 lineup, though the company did say they'll be available to purchase in August.
