Samsung Teases Circular Gear Smartwatch, Preps Devs For SDK

Do you prefer a more traditional round face when it comes to watches? If so, you'll be glad to know that Samsung is planning to go circular for its next Gear smartwatch. The forthcoming wearable will be Samsung's 7th generation Gear smartwatch, and leading up to the launch, Samsung for the first time is making its wearable software development kit (SDK) available to developers before the official product announcement.

Over on Samsung's developer portal, the company shows a giant, circular watch face with the tag line, "Get ready for the next Gear." Underneath is a series of smaller watch faces, all circles, showing different functions of the gear, like notifications, Google Maps, news, time and date, and so forth.

"We are collaborating with our global partners to provide a better Samsung Gear experience for users," Samsung states. "We welcome more developers to join us on this journey."

Samsung Gear Round

Inviting developers to the fold at this early stage and opening up the SDK is a smart move by Samsung. It gives them time to get familiar with the new form factor and code their apps accordingly.

"Samsung has actively adapted its approach to wearable device development as the leader of the rapidly developing category," said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. "Through meaningful and progressive innovation, Samsung welcomes to developers and industry leaders to join this open collaboration effort to enrich and create unique user experiences for a new smart mobile life."

It seems as though Samsung has already attracted a handful of big name partners ready to embrace the circular design, including CNN, Yelp, Baidu, FidMe, and Apposter.
