Sony PlayStation VR Recommends Seated Play And 60 Square Feet Of Open Space

PlayStation VR
While PC virtual reality (VR) gaming fans have the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to play around with (priced at $600 and $800 respectively), console gamers have largely been left out of the loop. That will change on October 13th, which is when the PlayStation VR will launch in the United States for the PlayStation 4 (and likely also the PlayStation 4 Neo).

Leading up to the PlayStation VR’s release, more details about the accessory are starting to leak to the internet (via a leaked PlayStation VR brochure). We’ve learned that gamers will need roughly 60 square feet of unobstructed space for the accessory to function optimally. Sony is also keen to point that you will need to remain seated while playing, likely for liability reasons. The last thing Sony needs is a lawsuit after someone trips and breaks an arm while wearing the PlayStation VR.

However, Sony does note, “If an application requires you to stand while wearing the VR headset, follow the application instructions carefully, and maintain awareness of your surroundings.”

Sony also clearly states that VR technology could possibly result in adverse side effects for some people. Given this high degree of variability, potential customers are urged to “Please try PS VR at shops or trial events before purchase."

Some other information gleaned from the brochure include the fact that gamers will be able to wear glasses inside the headset, and that other people in the room will be able to see a 2D version of the content being pumped to your PlayStation VR on the TV screen. Sony dubs this feature “Social Screen.”

The PlayStation VR headset features a 5.7-inch OLED display with a 1920x1080 resolution, or 960x1080 per eye. It supports refresh rates of 90 or 120 frames per second, includes 360-degree tracking and a 100-degree field of view. The headset will retail for $399 when it arrives this fall.
