Opera Mini Browser Receive Massive Android Update, Will Double User Base By 2017

Looking to change things up on your Android device? You can try the brand-spanking-new version of Opera Software's Opera Mini mobile browser, available free of charge from Google Play. Even if you've used Opera Mini on your handset or tablet before, the new version with its "dramatically redesigned interface" will offer a different experience.

Opera was shooting for a native Android look and feel with its revamped mobile browser. You'll find goodies like a simplified menu, an overhauled Speed Dial, private browsing mode so you shop birthday gifts on the down low (because that's what we use private browsing for, right? Right!?), options to customize the browser layout for thumb-friendly surfing, a scalable interface to accommodate higher resolution displays, and more.

One feature that the new Opera Mini browser retains is that it compresses webpages down to as little as 10 percent of their original size. This is supposed to speed up browsing and, if you're on a capped data plan, help you make the most out of your allotted data.

Opera Software has high hopes for its new browser, and beyond. The company says it's aiming to reach 275 million users on the Android platform by 2017, an ambitious goal that would more than double the number of users currently surfing the net on Opera Mini.

"This growth will further cement Opera's position as a dominant browser in fast-growing, emerging economies," says Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software.
