Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops Get Down to Business with Better Battery Life, Thinner Designs, High Res Displays
It was a long road to the top for Lenovo, the world's largest PC maker in terms of market share, and it got there by focusing on features customers want. If Lenovo's going to retain its crown, it will have to continue listening to its customers, and in fact that's exactly what the company claims inspired new enhancements to its ThinkPad performance and value portfolio.
Lenovo's upgraded ThinkPad laptops are thinner, lighter, and last up to 13.7 hours on a single charge, yet they still support full connectivity capabilities that its commercial customers demand, the company says. And though they're less bulky, ThinkPad laptops are still MIL-SPEC tested for durability and reliability.
"As the No. 1 commercial notebook PC maker in the world, we remain committed to our core business line of legendary ThinkPad notebooks – and to the customers who use them," said Dilip Bhatia, vice president, Marketing, Think Business Group, Lenovo. "These latest ThinkPad models raise the bar for business class notebooks with new high resolution displays, processor upgrades and powerful graphics delivering exceptional performance and proven security features, in a simpler, cleaner design."
Marketing fluff aside, two of the new ThinkPads include the T440p and T540p. These are billed as premium business notebooks powered by Intel's quad-core Core i7 processors (Haswell). Select systems come with NVIDIA GeForce GT730M graphics, up to 16GB of RAM, SSD and HDD options up to 1TB, 4G/LTE, mini-DisplayPort, VGA, four USB 3.0 ports, and a microSD card reader. The T440 boasts up to 13.7 hours of battery life, while the T540p lasts up to 12.6 hours, both with the Extended Battery Pack. Look for these to ship sometime in November; no word yet on price.
Next up is the ThinkPad W540, Lenovo's most powerful mobile workstation ever. This is a 15.5-inch laptop with a 3K (2880x1620 resolution) In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel. It also features Haswell processor options, along with up to 32GB of RAM, NVIDIA Quadro graphics, up to 2TB of storage with RAID options, Thunderbolt port, and more. For graphics professonals, you can calibrate the display using the integrated X-Rite color calibrator. The W540 will also be available in November.
Lenovo also introduced its L440 and L540 laptops for value conscious buyers. These laptops have Haswell inside and vPro technology, along with dual HD noise cancelling microphones, an HD camera, 4G/LTE, and more. These will be available in October starting at $729.
Finally, Lenovo rolled out its ThinkPad E440 and E540 laptops. These have Haswell processor options, optional NVIDIA graphics, Dolby Advanced Audio, up to 16GB of RAM, an optical drive, an optional touchscreen for navigating Windows 8, and a few other odds and ends. It looks like these are being targeted at the overseas market, at least initially, with pricing starting at €629.
