HTC’s First Wearable Will Support iOS And Android, Feature Flexible 1.8-Inch PMOLED Display
HTC's desire to jump into the smartwatch category has been ongoing for some time now, though it's taking a patient approach in hopes of avoiding a product failure. Newly leaked information also suggests that HTC isn't interested in releasing a run-of-mill Android wearable that will blend in with the rest. Instead, the device will run a home brewed OS that supports both Android and iOS phones.
That's coming from Upleaks, which posted a bunch of details on the device, including its codename "PETRA." It will be HTC's first wearable and it will run the company's own RTOS. We're not sure what that stands for, but there's a note that it will support Android phones running Android 4.4 or later, and iOS devices running iOS 7 or later.
If the leaked information is accurate, it will have a 1.8-inch PMOLED flexible display with a 160x32 resolution. PMOLED, or Passive Matrix OLED, is a type of display controlled by switching on rows and columns. They're cheap to build and limited to small screen sizes, whereas AMOLED displays are more expensive and better suited for larger screens.
Other features include Bluetooth, GPS, water/dustproof rated at IP57, and three days or more of battery life. That latter bit is a big deal, as some other smartwatch designs may need to be charged every night, or even multiple times per day, depending on how it's used.
The watch will reportedly come in three sizes (small, medium, large) and two color options (black and blue-gray). It will also come with a footpad for keeping a more accurate count of steps.
