Google Fiber Expansion Continues To Fire Shots Across The Bows of ISPs

We've said it in the past, and we'll say it again: if there are two mainstream tech industries that could use a disruption, it's cable TV and broadband Internet. Google is actually doing a fair job of disrupting both, and if you had any worries about Google investing in Fiber for Kansas City and then forgetting all about it... let this calm those fears. Google has just announced that its Fiber initiative is going over so well, that it'll soon be expanding. Olathe, Kansas is a nearby suburb of the metro Kansas City region, and it's actually known as "Silicon Prairie" in some parts.

This week, the Olathe City Council approved an agreement to bring Google Fiber to their city. Olathe has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Kansas and has attracted an influx of new businesses and residents. In other words, yet another population center is about to have access to affordable Gigabit-speed Internet, TV, and phone services from Google. The company has confessed that it still has "a lot of planning and engineering work to do" before Fiber is ready for use in Olathe, but it'll be firing up pre-registration links as soon as feasible.

The best part? This statement from Google: "Hopefully, this is the first of several announcements that we'll be able to make about bringing Google Fiber to additional cities in the KC metro area; so stay tuned." The continued rollout should serve as a warning sign to conventional ISPs. The days of over-charging for mediocre speeds could soon be drawing to an end, particularly if Google is willing to invest in fiber for even more regions of the U.S. You can bet that we're crossing our fingers and hoping that it does.
