Exploding Kittens Game Makes Fiery Hairball Debut On Android Devices

Just over a year after its debut, Exploding Kittens remains the project with the most backers in Kickstarter history, tallying nearly 203,000 supporters who pledged a combined $8.7 million (and change) to the card game. Since then, Exploding Kittens has made the jump from physical to digital, first with a release to iOS and now to Android devices as well.

If you're not familiar with the project, Exploding Kittens is a humorous card game that's somewhat akin to Russian Roulette. Players draw cards hoping to avoid an Exploding Kitten, otherwise they're dead and out of the game. That is, unless the player has a coveted Defuse card, in which case they can wipe their brow and live to play another round (as well as secretly insert the Exploding Kitten card anywhere in the deck they wish).

There are various special cards in the deck, ones that allow you to skip a turn, peek ahead at the next three cards in the deck, and other things that add strategy to what would otherwise be a simple game of luck. All of them have funny pictures of cats in the vein of The Oatmeal, the hugely popular comic by Matthew Inman, one of the creators of Exploding Kittens.

The digital versions of Exploding Kittens for iOS and Android are the same as the physical ones, only without the optional NSFW deck. There's also some new cards that are exclusive to the digital versions, like drawing from the bottom of the deck and reversing the order in which people draw cards.

You can play with two to five people online, and not just with other Android peeps—iOS and Android uers can play together across both platforms. Kudos to the Exploding Kittens team for that!

Exploding Kittens runs $1.99. There are also in-app purchases available that range in price for $0.99 to $1.99 per item. You can download Exploding Kittens for Android here and for iOS here.
