Duke Nukem 3D World Tour Brings New Levels, Bubble Gum Chewing Trash Talk To PCs And Consoles
Duke Nukem is making yet another return to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and can you guess what he's all out of? That's right, there won't be any gum chomping or bubble blowing, but in Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, there will be plenty of alien carnage, even more than you remember playing when the iconic original shipped two decades ago.
For those of us who've been gaming since the days of MS-DOS and before, it's a sobering thought that 20 years has passed since Duke Nukem 3D landed on our beige desktops. It helped popularize the first-person shooter genre, though it's just as memorable for Duke Nukem's over-the-top macho personality. He's at times sexist and often vulgar, but admittedly entertaining.
Now 20 years later, several members of the original gang that brought Duke Nukem 3D to light have teamed up to work on an anniversary edition, one that will resurrect the original experience and add a brand new fifth episode with eight levels to the fray.
The folks at GameSpot sat down with Gearbox Software publishing producing Scott Warr to talk about the updated Duke Nukem 3D title and what to expect. According to Warr, the new levels will feel like a continuation of original game and be about the same length. There will be some additional lighting effects that weren't possible in 1996, but otherwise the new levels should look and feel like they've been there all along.
There will be new music and new soundbites from the original voice of Duke Nukem, actor Jon St. John, but will all have an old-school feel. Same goes for the retro graphics.
"Duke Nukem 3D turns 20 this year. It was really important for us to keep Duke Nukem 3D in that retro feel and look. It's not an up-res. We didn't do the new true 3D renderer. As you can see when you look up, things aren't stretched anymore. It actually stays and looks like buildings or whatever. The skybox looks like a skybox. We also relit the entire thing," Warr explained.
