Street Fighter V Will Reward Devoted Combatants With Free DLC

It's been an interesting year for fans of fighting games. With Mortal Kombat X, gaming buddies can finally settle the debate as to who would win in a fight, Jason Voorhees or Predator. And with Street Fighter V, Capcom is introducing a new way to play, one that features a brand new service-based approach with regards to downloadable content (DLC).

Straight to the point, you'll never have to buy DLC. Additional content will either be free to download outright, or can be earned simply by playing the game. Balance changes and system adjustments will fall into the former category, while the latter category covers post-launch gameplay related content. By going this route, Capcom is able to promise that the initial Street Fighter V release is the only version/disk you'll ever need to buy and own.

"That’s right; Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content (such as characters) for free, simply by playing the game," Capcom said in a blog post. "Long gone are the days of forced Super and Ultra upgrades! Enjoy free balance updates as soon as they become available, and find and choose the post-launch characters that you want to get."

Street Fighter V will launch with 16 playable characters, four of which will be brand new ones. After launch, Capcom will add new characters on a continuous basis, giving gamers new content to enjoy. And again, these will be earnable additions.

"With Street Fighter V, we want to change the way that players interact with the series, and create an ever-evolving environment for players to enjoy. By releasing new characters on a regular basis, it will ensure that there is always new content to look forward to in the short term, and it prevents the competitive environment from ever becoming stale," Capcom added.

Additional characters and post launch content can be purchased using "Fight Money," which is currency earned through playing the game, or through "Zenny," which is premium currency that players can purchase with real money to immediate gain access to new content.

Street Fighter V is scheduled to release on Windows and PlayStation 4 in March of next year.
