Apple CEO Tim Cook recently celebrated his five-year anniversary as CEO and the one billionth iPhone sold. Cook argues that his job, however, is not always a bucket of lollipops and rainbows. The self-proclaimed “lonely” CEO recently sat down with The Washington Post to discuss the difficult and controversial topics like the future of iPhones, AI, the Chinese market, possible tax evasion in Europe, Project “Titan”, and the importance of AR. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the interview was the love Cook showed for augmented reality. Apple has largely stayed away from augmented reality, however,... Read more...
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be revealed for all in roughly a month, but details on Apple’s next generation flagships continue to leak at a furious pace. Last week, we saw the iPhone 7 Plus in a stunning shade of blue via a prototype mockup. Today, the always reliable Mark Gurman is shedding some more light on both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. Both new models will reportedly feature the biggest change to the home button since the arrive of Touch ID on the iPhone 5s. Instead of having a physical “switch” that is activated with a button press, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will feature... Read more...
Apple sold roughly 7 million less iPhone devices last quarter than it did in the same quarter a year ago, but that didn't stop it from reaching a significant milestone. During an employee meeting in Cupertino on Wednesday morning, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the sale of the one billionth iPhone, an impressive feat no matter how you slice it. "iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It's become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day," said Cook.... Read more...
Apple’s sales across the board are continuing to slump, and that was on full display in the company’s Q3 earnings report. But despite downward-trending sales, its revenue and profit totals for the quarter are nothing to scoff at. The company reported quarterly revenue of $42.4 billion and net income of $7.8 billion — this is compared to $49.6 billion and $10.7 billion respectively for Q3 2015. “We are pleased to report third quarter results that reflect stronger customer demand and business performance than we anticipated at the start of the quarter,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We had a very successful... Law enforcement officials are seeking help from a professor at Michigan State University with creating a special 3D printed replica of a homicide victim's fingers in order to unlock his phone using his fingerprints. In theory it sounds like a brilliant idea, one that would sidestep the potentially contentious process of trying to get Apple or Google to assist with unlocking the device, only there's a pretty major roadblock that stands in the way. There are safeguards in place that require a passcode if a fingerprint scanner hasn't been used in quite some time. For example, as of iOS 9, Apple added... Read more...
If you are worried that someone is trying to hack into your iPhone via radio transmissions, Edward Snowden might have the solution for you. Snowden and hardware hacker Andrew “Bunnie” Huang just announced a design for a case-like device that connects to your iPhone and detects whether its radio is transmitting a signal. Snowden and Huang argued that phones can still transmit a signal if they are in airplane mode. Your GPS is still active even if your phone is not. They also contended that Faraday bags can still leak transmissions. A lone ranger phone therefore is not necessarily safe from surveillance. How... Read more...
If we're to be blunt, running out of storage space on a smartphone sucks, and it sucks harder when there's no convenient way to add more storage. Such is the case with every mode iPhone Apple has ever produced, all of which lack a microSD card slot. And in this modern era, including a paltry 16GB of storage on the base model is a punch to the silly bits. Thankfully that's about to change. We'd like to think that Apple finally saw the light, though it could just have easily been motivated to bump up the storage on its base model by the recent first ever year-over-year decline in iPhone shipments.... More than 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. On average, twenty-two people die a day without one. Apple is hoping to reduce this number by adding a organ donor signup button within its Health information app that comes installed on every iPhone. The button is being introduced in collaboration with Donate Life, a non-profit national organization committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation. The app update will be introduced this week to software developers who have requested early access to iOS 10. It will be available on all iPhones this... Read more...
“Florida Man” tales are legendary, even in the tech field. He does everything from jamming cellphone signals on his daily commute to asking Siri where to hide a dead body. The Florida Man’s latest antics may well include suing Apple for $10 billion USD and claiming he invented an "iPhone"  prototype in 1992. Thomas S. Ross (of course Mr. Ross is actually just from Florida and not related to the aforementioned escapades), filed a patent for an “electronic reading device” in 1992. Ross's patent was never actually approved, because he failed to pay the appropriate fees. The application was... Read more...
Nothing says “finger-licking good” like a bargain basement smartphone charger. Wait, what? Apparently the marketing geniuses over at KFC India have come up with what might be one the oddest promos that we’ve seen in quite some time. KFC India has debuted a limited edition version of its 5-in-1 combo, which comes in what’s called a Watt a Box. Besides the greasy chicken and sides that you’d usually find inside your meal box, there’s also a 6100 mAh power bank that can be used to recharged your Android smartphone or iPhone (both microUSB and Lightning cables are included). Despite the generous capacity... Read more...
U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi claimed at a Democratic National Convention Platform Hearing that the vast majority of smartphone technology was “invented” by the federal government. Her argument was for more more research and development spending in the federal budget.  Pelosi explained, “Anybody here have a smartphone? In this smartphone, almost everything came from federal investments and research. GPS, created by the military, flatscreens, LLD [sic], digital camera, wireless data compression, research into metal alloys for strength and lightweight, voice recognition... Read more...
After years of speculation, it appears that Intel has finally won a spot inside Apple’s iPhone 7 according to a new report from Bloomberg. Qualcomm has been the primary supplier of wireless modems inside iPhones for years, but its role will be diminished thanks to Apple’s new agreement with Intel. It’s not all sours news for Qualcomm, however, as it’s been reported that the company will still supply chips for CDMA versions of the iPhone, like those that operate on Verizon Wireless/Sprint in the United States and for the Chinese market. Intel chips will be used in GSM versions of the iPhone 7 (i.e.... Read more...
Police in New York said two men were able to steal 19 iPhone devices from Apple's SoHo store last week. Nobody was held up at gunpoint and there was no ruckus of any kind—the ingenious thieves thwarted the swarm of Apple geniuses by dressing "similarly" to one of them so as not to draw undue attention to themselves. It's not known exactly what attire they had on, but Apple employees typically dress up in blue t-shirts sporting a while Apple logo on the front a few inches below the neckline. That wouldn't be tough to replicate. Even without the logo, someone simply wearing the same or similar color... Read more...
Are you a disgruntled iOS user who yearns for the ability to run Android on your iPhone? We didn't think so either, but in the event that there is someone out there wanting this functionality, Tendigi might just have a solution to suit them. At the moment, there is no product for sale; rather, Tendigi is just giving us a preview of what it's come up with, and has even detailed the build steps at its blog.
