Xbox Play Anywhere PC And Xbox One Initiative Launches September 13th

It's been known for a while that Microsoft has been planning to roll out a mechanism that would allow someone to purchase one copy of a game and have it playable on both the Xbox One and PC, and at last month's E3 event, we discovered that it'd be called 'Xbox Play Anywhere'. Now, we also know its launch date: September 13.

It's almost surreal to think that Xbox Play Anywhere is actually going to happen, as it's something that gamers have wanted for a long time. Sometimes, people simply like to play a game on multiple platforms, but never does someone actually want to spend twice the money to do so. It's one game, after all.

Well, when the Windows 10 Anniversary Update drops, as well as a big Xbox One update this summer, both platforms will be prepped for the functionality. While it'd be a bit simple for a game to simply be made available on two platforms for one person, Microsoft's made it really useful by syncing data between them - the goal is complete interoperability. Finish playing on one platform, and enjoy being able to load your saved game on the other.

The games that are expected to become available with the launch of Xbox Play Anywhere are:

  • Ark: Survival Evolved
  • Crackdown 3
  • Cuphead
  • Forza Horizon 3
  • Gears of War 4
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Killer Instinct Season 3
  • ReCore
  • Scalebound
  • Sea of Thieves
  • State of Decay 2
  • We Happy Few

That's a small collection to start, but these are all newer (or brand-new) games. As time goes on, we're sure that this list will grow dramatically. If there's anything unfortunate about the program as a whole, it's that Sony gamers won't be able to enjoy the same kind of functionality, nor might it even be possible. Microsoft is in a very privileged situation to make this happen, as it owns both the Xbox and Windows. Will it be enough to encourage PC gamers to finally pick up an Xbox One? Time will tell.
