LaCie Launches Museum-Ready Chromé RAID-0 1TB USB-C External SSD Priced at $1,100
Computer parts don't have to look geeky or boring. Few companies know this better than LaCie, which has a history of dressing up external storage devices in spiffy digs. Adding to its portfolio of fancy storage devices is its new Chromé, which is not to be confused with anything having to do with Google.
The Chromé is a desktop storage accessory that packs a pair of 500 gigabyte M.2 SATA solid state drives in RAID 0. That gives users a total of 1-terabyte of blazing fast storage, and to keep the interface from being a bottleneck, LaCie equipped the Chromé with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port with a Type-C connector.
LaCie's decision to use Gen 2 is an important distinction. There's a bit of confusion in the USB space because of the new names and connectors, but what you need to know is that USB 3.1 Gen 1 is really just USB 3.0, and that's regardless of whether it sports a familiar Type-A or new Type-C connector. It's the Gen 2 spec that bumps up theoretical bandwidth to 10Gb/s.
According to LaCie, its Chromé delivers real-world speeds of up to 940MB/s. That's fast enough to transfer two full hours of 4K GoPro footage in just over a minute. For content creators, LaCie says its drive configured in RAID 0 makes architectural and 3D modeling tasks smoother and faster, allowing uses to edit high resolution video without first having to downgrade the resolution.
As for the aesthetics, each Chromé enclosure is hand assembled from solid chromed zinc and then chromed to a mirror polish. It sits in an attractive dock with powerful neodymium magnets, allowing users to detach the drive when needed.
The 1TB Chromé carries an MRSP of $1,100 and will be available early this quarter.
