Gigabyte Ensures Its FM2+ Motherboards Will Play Nice With AMD's Godavari APUs
AMD on Thursday introduced the world to its A10-7870K APU, otherwise known as Godavari, though it's actually a light refresh of the existing Kaveri core. Codenames aside, the A10-7870K APU is a compelling option with a slight speed bump in clock frequency over the A10-7850K (3.9GHz to 4.1GHz versus 3.7GHz to 4.0GHz) and a big bump in the graphics core clock speed (866MHz versus 720MHz). If you're thinking about picking up the chip when it becomes available in June but don't know if it will work in your in your Gigabyte-brand FM2+ motherboard, you can put your mind to rest -- it will.
It doesn't matter which specific model you own, Gigabyte says that its entire lineup of FM2+ boards are now compatible with the newly launched A10-7870K. That's not really a surprise, considering the chip's Kaveri DNA -- though it's called Godavari, it uses the same microarchitecture and 28nm manufacturing process as Kaveri. However, if you need peace of mind, you now have it.
That said, you'll likely need to update the BIOS. Which version will depend on which of Gigabyte's 25 FM2+ motherboards you own. For example, if you own Gigabyte's G1.Sniper A88X motherboard, you'll need to update the BIOS to version F9.
Don't stress over this, it's pretty easy to find out which BIOS version you need. Simply head here and either search for your motherboard by keyboard or narrow it down using the pull-down menus at the top. Once you've selected your board, click on BIOS and then CPU Support List.
